Description:

Braskem’s ambition to lead sustainable innovation in chemicals and plastics requires excellence in managing the toxicological and risk assessment needs for disruptive innovations.  Additionally, as more intensive regulatory requirements evolve world-wide, Braskem is intensifying its effort to manage these changes and ensure the continued health and environmental safety of its products.  This Global Product Stewardship Toxicologist position will be dedicated to focusing on proactively leading the toxicological and risk assessment needs to sustain and grow Braskem’s global businesses.  This role interfaces heavily with Legal Regulatory, Commercial, Procurement, Innovation and Technology, Sustainable Development, Circular Economy, and Industrial areas globally. 


Key Responsibilities Include: 

  • Lead and/or perform product hazard, exposure, and/or risk assessments and toxicological reviews as well as prepare evidence-based reports to support and deliver business continuity and/or new sustainable product innovation needs.
  • Define, conduct, and/or manage any in silico methodologies or toxicological testing strategies.
  • Critically evaluate and synthesize toxicological literature.
  • Manage the risk characterization and prioritization process for Braskem raw materials and products.
  • Develop and promote regulatory strategies and advocacy efforts to demonstrate the health or environmental safety of Braskem products or new product innovations.
  • Monitor emerging regulatory and hazardous substance trends to proactively anticipate impacts to Braskem’s core products or products innovations.
  • Utilize scientific principles and theories, entrepreneurship, and creativity to assist, develop, and/or recommend solutions to highly complex problems.
  • Provide competent and confident leadership and training for other Product Stewards in toxicology and risk assessments.
  • Provide clarity to the business for managing the ambiguity in the regulations related to toxicological and risk assessment uncertainties.
  • Provide toxicological and exposure assessments, reports, and documentation to support high quality dossiers for chemical management or other regulatory submissions.
  • Model and promote a Product Stewardship (PS) ethic and mindset within Braskem and externally.
  • Train, mentor, support and advise PS/PR leaders and teams in four different regions (US, Brazil, Mexico, and EU/Asia).
  • Train, mentor, support and/or advise Circular Economy, I&T, Sustainable Development and business teams globally.

Requirements: 

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, pharmacy, ecotoxicology, toxicology, or relevant scientific discipline.  PhD or MSc in toxicology or ecotoxicology preferred.
  • Board certification in toxicology (DABT) a plus.
  • Subject-matter expertise in conducting toxicological assessments and risk assessments. Minimum of 5+ years’ experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 5+ years’ experience in product safety/product stewardship/regulatory affairs area
  • Experience with petrochemicals and polyolefins beneficial.

Preferred skills, education & experience: 

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, ecotoxicology, toxicology or relevant scientific discipline. PhD or MSc in toxicology or ecotoxicology highly preferred.
  • Strong computer skills required; Proficient with MS Office such as SharePoint and Excel, including bulk manipulation of data and process flows.
