POSITION SUMMARY: The Prototype Finisher is responsible for executing high-quality finishing work on custom-designed prototypes using materials such as wood, metal, and composite surfaces. This role supports the final phase of prototype production by applying precise surface treatments and finishes that align with project specifications and brand standards. The Finisher works closely with design, engineering, and production teams to ensure presentation-ready samples that reflect the company’s craftsmanship and design intent. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: • Apply a variety of finishing techniques including spraying, brushing, hand-rubbing, and polishing to achieve desired textures, colors, and finishes. • Work with different finishing systems such as catalyzed lacquers, conversion varnishes, polyurethanes, powder coating, and waterborne coatings. • Finish parts made from wood, metal, and composite surfaces, adjusting techniques based on material behavior and project requirements. • Prepare surfaces through sanding, filling, cleaning, and masking to ensure optimal finish application and adhesion. • Conduct custom color matching and mixing to meet design specifications and maintain consistency across prototype components. • Perform final detailing and touch-ups to ensure showroom-quality appearance. • Collaborate with prototype builders, engineers, and designers to troubleshoot finishing challenges and support iterative development. • Maintain a clean and organized spray booth and finishing area, following proper ventilation, material storage, and equipment maintenance protocols. • Adhere to all environmental, health, and safety standards in handling and disposing of finishing materials and chemicals. • Document finishing processes and material usage to support quality control and repeatability for production teams. • Performs other related duties as assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: This position has no direct reports. POSITION REQUIREMENTS: • OSHA or other safety certification related to hazardous materials handling preferred. • Familiarity with color matching software or digital spectrophotometers. • Skilled in the safe use and maintenance of spray guns, ventilation systems, and finishing tools. • Ability to read technical drawings and finish specs. • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams. • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. • Excellent time management skills with the proven ability to meet deadlines. REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: • High school diploma or equivalent preferred. • 2+ years of finishing experience in a custom millwork, furniture, or fabrication environment. • Strong knowledge of surface preparation, color theory, and finishing systems for various substrates. • Experience working with high-end finishes and tight quality standards in a fast-paced prototype or production setting. • This role involves working in a spray booth and workshop environment where exposure to fumes, dust, and chemicals is common. Use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is required. OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS: • Must be able to work in hot and cold climates • Varying work schedules based on business need are sometimes required • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear • Ability to read drawings and blueprints • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time • Ability to carry and lift materials up to 25 lbs.
