General Information
As part of Texas A&M AgriLife Research, the Sonora Research Station is tasked with creating and delivering science for the ranching and natural resources profession in southwest Texas. This 3,400-acre ranch is located in Edwards and Sutton counties and has an over 100-year history of conducting research concerning topics such as grazing management, watersheds, toxic plants, and prescribed fire. We are looking for a motivated individual with knowledge of basic ranch management tasks, a strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and a desire to gain practical management experience. This will provide the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience in managing livestock, natural resources, equipment, and personnel, while applying modern science-based techniques and time-tested ranching skills.
Job Description
The Ranch Management Intern will be responsible for typical ranch management tasks such as:
- feeding and health care of livestock, conducting prescribed fires, and participating in wildlife surveys.
- maintenance of infrastructure such as water lines, fences, equipment, and buildings, which involves driving an agency vehicle to perform duties.
- will be involved in developing grazing and livestock health management plans.
- will additionally oversee the work of temporary employees such as student interns as needed.
- other duties as assigned.
All of these activities will be in coordination with and support of the station’s research and education mission. The objective for this position will be for the individual to progress from a performer of tasks to a participant in management decision making.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Two years of practical ranch experience including basic animal vet care and handling skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, Range Science, Wildlife, Agronomy, or a related discipline.

- Knowledge of basic skills such as welding or ranch plumbing.
Required Certifications:
- Must obtain a driver’s license.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Willingness to perform routine tasks (i.e. clean water troughs or fix fence) in sometimes challenging environments (i.e. hot or cold weather and remote locations).
- Good communication skills.
- Team player, willing to learn.
- Exhibits confidence in working independently in remote locations.
- Safety minded.
- Desire to serve the ranching and natural resource professions.
- Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
