General Description / Primary Purpose:
The Registered Nurse (RN) at UNF Student Health Services (SHS) provides professional, student-centered nursing care to domestic and international students. RNs are essential in promoting health, preventing illness, and delivering direct clinical care in an ambulatory care setting. As compassionate educators and collaborators, RNs guide students in navigating healthcare, often for the first time independently. They collaborate with medical professionals, staff, and student interns to ensure safe and efficient care.
Job Functions:
Clinical Care & Patient Encounters
• Perform patient triage in person and via phone, offering clinical guidance within RN scope.
• Room patients and gather vitals, allergies, medications, and screening data (e.g., PHQ-2, HITS).
• Conduct nurse visits for immunizations, TB testing, STI screening, wound care, injections (e.g., Depo, Rocephin), emergency contraception, allergy shots, and suture/staple removal.
• Perform travel health consultations, including education and vaccine review, following completion of internal training.
• Perform phlebotomy and serve as a backup lab nurse when needed.
• Conduct point-of-care testing (e.g., flu, strep, mono, COVID, pregnancy, glucose, trichomonas).
• Monitor treatments such as nebulizer therapy and peak flow.
• Manage student equipment loans and ensure documentation is up to date.
• Follow up with students referred off-campus, assisting with referrals and tracking progress.
• Monitor and review immunization records for students requiring physicals, ensuring documentation aligns with CDC and program-specific requirements.
Teamwork & Communication
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to support patient flow, care, and safety.
• Communicate effectively with students, families, and external providers, maintaining confidentiality and sensitivity to diverse needs.
• Provide a supportive, calming presence, especially for students new to healthcare environments.
• Collaborate with external partners, such as the Florida Department of Health, for HIV counseling and testing, ensuring confidentiality and patient care coordination.
Education & Empowerment
• Provide clear, compassionate patient education to promote informed decisions, healthy lifestyles, and self-care practices.
• Support health promotion activities, including campus outreach and engagement with students on health topics.
• Involve and support interns and learners in a collaborative, educational clinic environment.
Technology & Documentation
• Accurately document all care, assessments, and communications in Medicat (EHR).
• Use Microsoft Office, Teams, and other platforms to coordinate tasks and communication.
• Maintain timely, organized charting practices that support clear communication, continuity of care, and compliance with documentation standards.
Professional Expectations
• Maintain an active RN license (Florida or multistate).
• Complete all required annual trainings and continuing education.
• Follow state Nurse Practice Acts, UNF SHS policies, and ACHA standards.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives, peer reviews, and compliance efforts.
• Attend staff meetings and engage in professional development opportunities as assigned.
Department Requirements
• Ambulatory Care Nursing Certification (AMB-BC) is encouraged for those interested in deepening their expertise in ambulatory care and advancing their knowledge in the field.
• Nursing experience preferred, ideally in ambulatory care or college health settings.
• Team-oriented and collaborative.
• Strong computer skills and ability to quickly learn new systems.
