EnergyHub empowers utilities and their customers to create a clean, distributed energy future. We help consumers turn their smart thermostats, EVs, batteries, and other products into virtual power plants that keep the grid stable and enable higher penetration of solar and wind power.
The Regulatory Affairs Specialist will be an integral part of the Market Development team, with the primary responsibility of accelerating EnergyHub’s growth through regulatory advocacy. They will engage in PSC proceedings to help scale existing customer programs, and advocate for reforms that ultimately unlock the full value potential of demand flexibility. The Specialist will report to the Regulatory Affairs Manager and will work with teams across the company to ensure that our advocacy reflects the latest and greatest of what EnergyHub has to offer.
The Regulatory Affairs Specialist will be both a big picture and analytical thinker who can turn complex device and DER program data into digestible comments and thought leadership for a diverse audience. You’re motivated to interface with a wide range of stakeholders in the industry and find middle ground amongst utilities, customers, and the distributed energy community. And, you never lose sight of high-priority state, federal, and agency programs that could fuel or hinder EnergyHub’s growth.Â
Main Responsibilities
- Track trends across grid modernization, integrated resource planning, demand-side management, transportation electrification, energy storage, rate cases, and state and federal legislation and grant programs, and prioritize our involvement in the highest-leverage initiatives
- Participate in integrated resource planning/potential study cycles to promote the use of demand-side resources and virtual power plants in long-term grid planning
- Contribute to the development of playbooks for reforming DSM portfolio planning and implementation, with an emphasis on breaking down barriers between energy efficiency and demand response
- Work with internal and external stakeholders to educate regulators and advocate for the role of software in facilitating demand flexibility through innovative retail rates
- Contribute to the creation of resources designed to educate internal stakeholders and senior leadership on important regulatory developments
- Participate in the evaluation of new business models or program ideas in response to federal or state-level policy initiatives (e.g., IIJA, IRA, state energy offices)
- Research and gain expertise in regulatory topics with the potential to accelerate the adoption of grid-edge resources and the programs that harness them (e.g., performance-based ratemaking, software capitalization, technical resource manuals and M&V protocols)
- Foster productive relationships with EnergyHub’s trade associations and represent EnergyHub at industry conferences
- Work with Product Marketing to create thought leadership materials such as blog posts and white papers in support of policy positions, onboarding outside consultants to craft collateral when appropriate
- Develop and maintain tools that provide EnergyHub team members with insight into pertinent regulatory policy
Key Skills and Experience
- BA/BS with 3-6 years of work experience, and at least 2 years in the energy sector
- Deep comprehension of the electricity industry and the utility business model, including key trends and stakeholder landscape
- Experience with utility programs, technologies and/or regulatory concepts spanning energy efficiency, demand flexibility, transportation electrification, energy storage, grid modernization, integrated resource planning, and customer rate designs
- Basic knowledge of wholesale electricity market design and operations
- Basic knowledge of distribution system management (e.g., interconnection, hosting capacity, network fault/constraint management)
- Experience drafting and copy editing regulatory comments, media, blogs, and customer-facing marketing and sales content
- An appetite to learn all about EnergyHub’s DERMS platform
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated success in a fast-paced team environment
- You have experience using Excel, Salesforce, Tableau, or other software tools to analyze and visualize data
- You have a knack for leveraging webinars and social media to express thought leadership, and nuanced policy perspectives, and shape market conversationsÂ
Preferred Skills and Experience
- 3+ years of experience in the energy and utilities industry
- Deeper knowledge of how utilities serve their customers (e.g., billing, call center operations, renewables interconnection)
- Experience participating in utility stakeholder proceedings or working groups
- Experience researching and analyzing the market impact of new policies, regulations, and program implementation rules and presenting those insights in working groups or formal hearings
The salary range for this position is $95,000-$110,000. Base pay offered may vary based on location, job-related knowledge, skills and experience.
