The Department of Defense (DoD) HIV/AIDS Prevention Program (DHAPP) is a dynamic global HIV/AIDS program working to curb HIV/AIDS in the militaries of foreign countries. The global HIV/AIDS epidemic negatively affects many militaries and other uniformed organizations worldwide by reducing military readiness, limiting deployments, causing physical and emotional decline in infected individuals and their families, posing risks to military personnel and their extended communities, and impeding peacekeeping activities. Specifically, the need is for project support to help DOD achieve their goal of reducing the transmission of STIs and HIV in foreign militaries. 

Western Door Federal is seeking a Research Analyst (Epidemiology) in San Diego, CA. The objective of this work is to support DHAPP and its Epidemiology Team in conducting HIV surveillance among foreign militaries.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Participate in assigned Seroprevalence and Behavioral Epidemiology Risk Survey (SABERS) studies: 


    • Participate in teleconferences and meetings and take meeting minutes if needed 


    • Assist with reviewing and drafting the study protocol 


    • Assist with reviewing and developing the survey 


    • Assist with reviewing the budget and supplies list 


    • Assist with reviewing and creating materials for remote/in-person needs assessment, survey pre-test, data collection training, and data dissemination 


    • Provide input for materials created by other epi team members 


    • Attend remote/in-person country visits when necessary 


    • Conduct statistical analyses under the supervision of epidemiologists and summarize findings in tables, figures, and text 



    • Provide support for summarizing study procedures and results in a final report 


  • Assist with other tasks as needed (e.g., conducting literature reviews) 


  • Available to travel internationally (approximately 25%) 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A master's degree in public health (MPH), with a concentration in epidemiology or a closely related field (e.g., global/international health) is required 
  • At least 1 year of epidemiological research experience is preferred  
  • Due to federal contract regulations, US citizenship is required 
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation 

 Specific skills:

  • Experience with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) 

  • Basic data analysis skills using SAS, SPSS, and/or R

Personal characteristics:

  •  Able to work independently and collaboratively with various types of professional staff and students from diverse cultures and disciplines 
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication sills 


  • Attention to detail and accuracy 

  • Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously and be flexible in responding to changing demands, timelines, and priorities 


Desired Skills:

  • Experience with foreign or domestic militaries
  • Experience with infectious diseases (such as HIV)
