Your Role and Responsibilities
IBM Research Europe (UK) is offering internships for MS and PhD students interested in experiencing the research environment in IBM Quantum. IBM Quantum is an industry first initiative to build universal quantum computers for business engineering and science. This effort includes advancing the entire quantum computing technology stack and exploring applications to make quantum computing broadly usable and accessible. With a worldwide network of Fortune 500 companies academic institutions researchers educators and enthusiasts we are committed to driving innovation for our clients in the IBM Quantum Network and the Qiskit Community.

During your internship you can expect to work on challenging research problems as part of a diverse team in a leading worldwide industrial research organisation. Based in the quantum computing team you will be expected to contribute to ongoing research in areas including: quantum simulation quantum machine learning quantum error correction and quantum error mitigation. Our cross-disciplinary approach to research coupled with the profound curiosity of our researchers and engineers offers a unique opportunity to participate in scientific and industrial research as part of a world-class research organisation. Interns have authored papers filed patents contributed to open-source projects and contributed to IBM products during their time with us.

Internships are for three months and are based at our Hursley (Winchester) or Daresbury (Warrington) facilities. IBM has a hybrid work model with three days onsite expected.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Applicants should be enrolled in a Master’s or Doctoral-level course and have a background in physics mathematics computer science chemistry or a related field focusing on quantum computing or quantum information.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.


Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Experience developing novel quantum algorithms.
  • Experience with the Qiskit SDK.
