Job Description
Job DescriptionPurpose Statement:
The Custodian plays a vital role in ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. This position supports daily operations by maintaining school facilities, assisting with event setups, performing minor maintenance, and helping safeguard property and equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Floor Care:
Sweep, mop, scrub, and apply finish to floors in classrooms, hallways, and stairwells. Vacuum carpeted areas to maintain cleanliness and safety.
• General Facility Cleaning:
Clean and dust surfaces, including walls, furniture, lockers, and whiteboards, in all instructional and administrative spaces.
• Restroom Sanitation:
Clean and disinfect restrooms and all plumbing fixtures. Ensure restrooms are stocked with supplies at all times.
• Trash and Recycling:
Remove trash and recycling from interior and exterior areas. Clean and disinfect bins and ensure proper disposal and recycling of materials.
• Outdoor Maintenance:
Maintain clean sidewalks, entryways, and playground areas. Clean drinking fountains and address minor drainage issues.
• Room and Event Setup:
Arrange furniture and equipment for classes, events, and meetings. Assist with the delivery and relocation of supplies and materials.
• Minor Maintenance:
Conduct basic repairs (e.g., replacing light bulbs, adjusting furniture, tightening fixtures) to support day-to-day operations.
• Facility Security:
Lock/unlock doors and gates, set alarms, check for open windows, and monitor for safety hazards. Raise/lower flags as required.
• Inventory and Supplies:
Maintain and restock custodial supplies. Organize and care for custodial equipment.
• Communication:
Maintain ongoing communication with site staff and supervisors. Submit maintenance work orders and check in regularly with the Senior Custodian.
• Specialized Cleaning:
Apply training in chemical use, bloodborne pathogen protocols, and floor care procedures to maintain high sanitation standards.
• Emergency Response:
Respond promptly to spills, leaks, or safety concerns to ensure a secure and sanitary environment.
• Facility Inspection:
Routinely inspect facilities for damage, safety risks, or vandalism. Report and address issues promptly.
• Campus Appearance:
Monitor and address litter or debris throughout the campus to maintain a neat and professional environment.
• Safety and Liability:
Secure school grounds and assist in minimizing risks related to property damage and safety concerns.
• Maintenance Support:
Assist the Maintenance & Operations team with site-related projects as assigned.
• Technology Use:
Use computers for job-related functions such as email communication, logging absences, and requesting substitute coverage.
• Professional Conduct:
Maintain a positive, team-oriented attitude. Take direction and manage multiple responsibilities with professionalism.
• Painting:
Paint classroom, office, and restroom interiors to maintain clean and updated spaces.
• Radio Communication:
Use two-way radios to communicate with staff and administration during daily operations and emergencies.
• Policy Compliance:
Adhere to all district-approved standards of cleanliness, safety, and custodial protocol.
• Other Duties as Assigned:
Perform additional related duties to support the overall maintenance and operations of the school.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Familiarity with industrial cleaning methods, materials, and equipment
• Basic math and literacy skills
• Ability to follow multi-step oral and written instructions
• Strong interpersonal skills; able to work with a diverse group of individuals
• Problem-solving abilities and adaptability to shifting priorities
• Dependability and the ability to work with minimal supervision
• Willingness to learn and follow all safety practices and training
• Ability to meet deadlines and operate effectively within a team
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to stand, walk, and move for extended periods
• Ability to lift and carry objects up to 75 lbs
• Visual and auditory ability to respond to job-related functions
• Capacity to perform manual labor in various environmental conditions
• Ability to communicate clearly and understand verbal instructions
