Job Description

Title:School Safety Officer Primary Function:Responsible for providing security and safety services and protecting the life and well-being of students, staff, and visitors. Under general direction of a supervisor, work is performed with considerable independence. Work involves an element of personal danger and requires the exercise of considerable judgment and the application of policy and procedures and tact. Work is reviewed through observation, conferences, written reports, inspections, and evaluation of results achieved. Reports To:Principal Essential Functions: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. • Responsible for the prevention and detection of criminal activity while assigned to a school or task. • Solves problems while working with schools or community organizations. • Assists law enforcement agencies in the prosecution of criminals. • Uses and cares for firearms, communications equipment, and other necessary equipment. • Uses computers to access information and generate clear and comprehensive reports. • Reports to supervisor accordingly. • Cooperates with Principals, Assistant Principals and other appropriate staff members by coordinating, recommending and advising them of proper practices/procedures necessary to secure the safe and peaceful conduct of district business/activities. • Cooperates with and is accessible to local, state and federal law enforcement agencies for participation in their respective training activities. • Cooperates and participates with other members of the criminal justice system to include Office of the State Attorney, Child Protective Investigators, and other state and federal agencies in the interest of public safety. • Remains alert and sensitive to potential disturbances and/or violations of the law through preventive measures of security. • Remains knowledgeable of current processes and procedures pertinent to the school guardian program through continued education, seminars, and training. • Provides security services during various meetings. • Demonstrates qualification with and uses departmental issued equipment; maintains departmental issued supplies and equipment, including weapons, ammunition, and other specialized supplies and equipment. • Demonstrates ability and performs defensive tactics. • Performs related duties as may be assigned and/or enacted by applicable department general orders and board policy. • Schedules may include shift work. • Responds, as ordered, to work during emergencies to include working extended duty hours over weekends and holidays, or during periods of severe or inclement weather. • Facilities management such as making sure all exit lights, door alarms, fire extinguishers, classroom locks, entrances/exits, are functional. • Scheduling fire drills and training students on code red drill Work Environment: This position operates in a school environment and requires the use of a firearm, a Taser, general office equipment, including personal computers, fax machines, copiers, telephones etc. Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; patrol; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Knowledge and Abilities: • Ability to pass psychological evaluation as required by Chapter 2018.3 Laws of Florida • Ability to be physically and mentally prepared to respond in an emergency or potentially dangerous situation • Ability to safely use a firearm, Taser, or other law enforcement related equipment • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple responsibilities • Ability to obtain information via observation and interviews • Ability to operate • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and privileged information • Demonstrate MYcroSchool's values of integrity, respect, service and learning • Ability to embrace and thrive in a flexible and changing and evolving environment • Highly skilled at organizing, prioritizing and detail work • Ability to communicate verbally and in a written format with a wide range of people from divergent socio-economic backgrounds and origins • Excellent communication skills Education and Experience: • High School diploma or equivalent • Law enforcement, security or military experience or training • Experience with safe use of firearms and Tasers • Ability to work in a school environment with youth aged 15 to 22 years of age Certifications and Licenses: • Successful completion of training for concealed carry weapon permit as a condition of employment and ongoing certification and training • Obtain and maintain a School Guardian Certificate • Successful completion of initial and ongoing training as required by the Chapter 2018-3, Laws of Florida condition of employment • Satisfactory completion of American Red Cross First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course within one year of employment • Valid Florida driver’s license *Work Year: July 1st to June 30th; 180 Days (School Year) Benefits: Florida Retirement System Excellent and Competitive Health Benefits Dental, Vision, Flexible Spending Account, Employee Assistance Plan Employer paid life Insurance of $75,000 Posting Date: September 17, 2024 Application Deadline: Open until filled Job Type: Full-time Pay: $32,000.00 - $37,000.00 per year Benefits: • Dental insurance • Health insurance • Vision insurance Schedule: • Monday to Friday Work Location: In person
