Overview

Develop methods and systems to measure environmentally and commercially important gases. Develop prototype instruments in a multidisciplinary and collaborative environment to implement and test such methods. Participate in product development from concept to production support. Work with internal colleagues, external collaborators, and suppliers to accomplish these goals.

Professional Qualifications

Education

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, or Engineering (emphasis in Spectroscopy, Laser Physics, or Optical Physics preferred.)

Experience

  • Experience in the research and development of gas concentrations measurement systems based on principals of optical spectroscopy.
  • Proficiency in laboratory experimentation, analysis, and problem solving.
  • Familiarity with lasers and laser applications in gas detection.
  • Familiarity with absorption spectra of trace gases such as methane, nitrous oxide, ammonia, carbon dioxide, and their isotopologues.
  • Creativity and innovation in developing new technologies, methods, algorithms, and applications in spectroscopy, optical system design and instrumentation.

Position ResponsibilitiesSpecific

  • Benchmark existing technologies and instrumentation.
  • Deepen LI-CORโ€™s understanding of chemical and physical principles for measuring gas concentrations using spectroscopy.
  • Model and predict measurement performance of proposed measurement techniques.
  • Develop computational methods for gas concentrations and related derived parameters from fundamental physical measurements.
  • Develop new technologies for measuring gas phase compositions..
  • Collaborate with suppliers, partners, and industry experts in understanding and developing technologies for measuring important gas species.
  • Develop prototypes to experimentally demonstrate feasibility of new technologies.
  • Characterize prototype performance results.
  • Participate in verification and validation of new products.
  • Acquire, use, and maintain appropriate lab equipment required for research and development activities.

General

  • Maintain specifications, test reports, and general documentation.
  • Review trade publications to stay abreast of new research, technology development, and potential applications.
  • Attend conferences and/or user sites to understand user needs, the competitive landscape and promote LI-COR products.
  • Light Work - exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly.
  • International travel, up to 25%, may be required.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.
