Position Overview: The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is seeking a motivated intern to support its Asset and Performance Management (APM) team. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in GIS, data analysis, and public infrastructure management while contributing to projects that have a direct impact on the safety and accessibility of Seattle’s streets. As an intern, you’ll help maintain and update critical asset data—particularly for curb ramps and sidewalks—using SDOT’s Enterprise Asset Management System and GIS web tools. You'll also support the development of interactive GIS dashboards and web applications that visualize asset conditions and locations, helping to inform decision-making. In addition, you’ll assist the team in evaluating and improving existing data maintenance workflows to increase efficiency and ensure data quality. This role is ideal for students or early-career professionals looking to apply their GIS and analytical skills in a real-world context while learning how data supports equitable and effective transportation planning. Job Responsibilities 35%Maintain and update asset work order and condition data using SDOT’s Enterprise Asset Management System to support accurate and reliable infrastructure records. 30%Learn and apply ESRI ArcGIS tools to update and manage asset geometries, contributing to the spatial accuracy of SDOT’s asset database. 20%Use existing GIS dashboard and Web applications to assist in tracking and reporting performance metrics related to transportation assets. 5%Collaborate with staff to enhance current GIS dashboards and develop new web applications that visualize asset conditions, locations, and trends. 5%Identify opportunities to streamline and improve asset data maintenance processes and workflows for greater efficiency and data quality. 5%Participate in meetings with the APM team and other asset management groups to gain insights into cross-functional operations and data-driven decision-making. Qualifications Education: Open to all undergraduate students enrolled in an accredited 2-year or 4-year educational program. Preferred Areas of Study: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Civil Engineering. Undergraduate Sophomore & Junior engineeringstudents must maintain a minimum of 2.5 GPA throughout the internship. Other undergraduate majorsmust maintain a minimum of 2.0 GPA throughout the internship. You will be successful in this internship if you have: • The ideal candidate will possess foundational analytical and technical skills, including proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite, a basic understanding of database management concepts, and general familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail, • Enjoy tackling problems and finding solutions, • Ability to work independently or in a team, Fast learner with computer software skill aptitude, Interest in working in public service. Additional Information Internship dates: Start/ End Dates: November 2025 – December 15th, 2026. Schedule: Intern will work up-to 20 hours/week while school is in session, up to 40 hours/week during school breaks. Work hours can be scheduled between 8am and 5pm Monday - Friday. May work weekends, may work evenings. Salary: Undergraduate students will be paid $21.78-$21.78 per hour. Undergraduate Engineering students will be paid $26.41 - $27.52 per hour.
