What we need
Seattle Pacific University is seeking aSenior Accountantto join our Finance Office team. This key role independently manages many of the University’s core accounting operations and plays a central part in ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant financial reporting. The Senior Accountant brings deep technical expertise, strong analytical skills, and the ability to collaborate across departments to support financial decision-making and advance the mission and values of SPU.
This position requires proficiency in Workday Financials and will provide leadership in leveraging the system for reporting, process improvements, and operational efficiency.
What you'll do
• Lead month-end and year-end close activities, including complex journal entries, allocations, reconciliations, and analysis.
• Serve as the primary operational expert for Workday Financials, designing reports, troubleshooting issues, and partnering with IT and business units to maximize ERP functionality.
• Oversee and perform reconciliations for high-volume accounts, resolving discrepancies in a timely manner.
• Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and University policies.
• Partner with departments across campus to provide accounting guidance, financial analysis, and process support.
• Oversee cash management activities, including bank reconciliations and wire transfers.
• Prepare schedules and documentation for annual external audits, serving as a key liaison with auditors.
• Lead or participate in cross-functional projects to improve processes and enhance financial reporting.
• Develop and maintain detailed accounting policies, procedures, and documentation.
• Mentor junior accounting staff, sharing technical expertise and best practices.

What you bring
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field.
• Minimum of 5 years progressive accounting experience, preferably in higher education, nonprofit, or complex organizations.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, audits, and internal controls.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
• Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Proficiency in Workday Financials required, including reporting and business process configuration.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills; adaptability with enterprise ERP systems and cloud-based tools.
• Must reside in Washington state.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• CPA license or active CPA candidate strongly preferred.
• Experience in higher education accounting, grants administration, or fund accounting.
• Demonstrated leadership in ERP system implementations or upgrades.
• Interest in advancing automation and analytics in accounting processes.
• Experience with Tableau, Power BI, or similar reporting tools.
Compensation and Benefits
• Salary range: $80,000 – $100,000 DOE
