Job Description

What if the work you did every day could impact the lives of people you know? Or all of humanity?

At Illumina, we are expanding access to genomic technology to realize health equity for billions of people around the world. Our efforts enable life-changing discoveries that are transforming human health through the early detection and diagnosis of diseases and new treatment options for patients.

Working at Illumina means being part of something bigger than yourself. Every person, in every role, has the opportunity to make a difference. Surrounded by extraordinary people, inspiring leaders, and world changing projects, you will do more and become more than you ever thought possible.

The Advanced Platforms group is seeking a Sr. Development Engineer with experience in system integration for biological applications. This team is involved in laying the foundation for the next generation of genomic sequencing systems and exciting new application-based peripherals. It is responsible for the earliest phases of product development including: collecting requirements, creation of system concepts, evaluation of design candidates, building organizational consensus, demonstrating feasibility and driving towards detailed product design. This position will be intimately engaged in design and development effort.

The ideal candidate will have a multi-disciplinary background with an understanding of the fundamental phenomena related to medical device instrumentation and consumables, including fluid flow and chemical/biological reactions. Demonstrated hands-on fabrication of fluidics/microfluidics devices and their associated testing platforms is also important. A flexible mindset to switch between different research and development topics is key.

A driven creativity and a passion for solving difficult problems in cross-disciplinary teams are crucial, as is the ability to be comfortable with the design equivalent of "a blank page".

Responsibilities:

  • Significantly contribute to developing new systems for high volume medical device consumables that integrate microfluidics, chemistry, and sensing
  • Work within the organization to collect and define system requirements
  • Brainstorm new concepts and drive towards down selection and proving out feasibility.
  • Apply analytical skills to improve understanding of fluidics phenomena happening inside consumables
  • Perform feasibility studies for performance, throughput, reliability, cost, ergonomics, and product quality
  • Design, analyze, assemble, and evaluate consumable/disposable devices and/or testbeds
  • Provide technical leadership to project teams, including more junior engineers.
  • Provide updates to project leadership.

Qualifications:

  • BSc/MS: 5+ years of experience
  • PhD: 0-3 years of experience
  • Degree is ideally in a discipline such as Microfluidics, Chemical Engineering, Bio Engineering, Electrical Engineering , Mechanical Engineering, Physics or a related area.
  • Relevant experience to the responsibilities described above
  • Fluidics / microfluidics background with very good understanding of the phenomena linked to fluid flow and chemical/biological reaction (Diffusion, dispersion, electrical field, mixing, flow regime)
  • Hands-on fabrication of fluidics/microfluidics devices, as well as the associated testbeds (valves, syringe pumps, pressurized fluidics)
  • Used modelling tools efficiently, either FEM or analytical. Ideally used for multiphysics modelling, such as microfluidics and chemical reaction
  • Experience with translating biological protocols from lab-scale to microfluidics is a plus
  • Experience with CAD software either 2D or 3D (preferably 3D)
  • Experience with software for statistical analysis
  • Ideally, familiarity with molecular biology concepts and DNA sequencing, as well as handling biological samples
  • Experience handling cells and tissues is a plus
  • Demonstrated efficient handling of teamwork and success in a collaborative environment
  • Excellent presentation skills

The estimated base salary range for the Senior Engineer - Development and System Integration role based in the United States of America is: $86,500 - $129,700. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable salary range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual's qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package. We offer a wide range of benefits as innovative as our work, including access to genomics sequencing, family planning, health/dental/vision, retirement benefits, and paid time off.
