Job Description

This position reports to the Global Head of Litigation, Investigation, and Regulatory Enforcement. The Litigation, Investigation and Regulatory Enforcement group has a global mandate, advising all Northern Trust entities on an array of legal matters, including pre-litigation business problems, corporate and representative litigation, government inquiries, and internal investigations. This role will focus on regulatory inquiries, enforcement, and monitoring, and will assist the group with general litigation and subpoena responses.

Major Duties:• Responsible for managing a variety of regulatory issues, including inquiries, complaints, enforcement and monitoring by and with regulators and auditors. This role will work with senior internal counsel to manage all aspects of a matter, including developing and implementing strategy, conducting early matter assessments, preparing management presentations and summaries, interviews, reviewing outside counsel work product and overseeing discovery.• Oversees internal discovery efforts with or without outside counsel, including coordination with internal e-discovery team about document identification, searching, collection, and production. A successful candidate will understand written and electronic discovery well-enough and will learn Northern Trust's data map well-enough to, for example, spot problems with discovery suggestions from outside or opposing counsel and advise senior internal counsel accordingly. • Responsible for creating and maintaining tracking tools and reports produced by the Litigation, Investigation and Regulatory Enforcement group.• Drafts, facilitates and implements legal hold notices.• Conducts complex research and prepares summaries of findings.• Responsible for supporting Northern Trust's response to subpoenas, levies, garnishments and other legal process served on Northern Trust.• Responsible for preparing employees, with or without the assistance of outside counsel, for regulatory interviews or exams, depositions and trial/hearing testimony.• Handles assorted miscellaneous litigation matters.• Responsible for working collaboratively with outside counsel and other legal and forensic vendors.• Effectively communicates with internal partners (e.g., relationship managers, Legal Department, Risk/Compliance, Tax, Human Resources) and external parties (e.g., external or opposing counsel, other financial institutions, law enforcement, regulators, investigations staff) in the course of investigations or information gathering.

Experience:• Must have a valid state license to practice law.• Must have strong experience providing legal advice about regulatory compliance or enforcement or equivalent experience with a regulator or auditor (five or more years preferred). An ideal candidate will have effectively interacted with or directly supposed a team interacting with financial services regulators.• Must have some experience with internal interviews and investigations.• Must have some experience with subpoena and discovery responses, including document identification, collection, and production. An ideal candidate also will have familiarity with legal holds, document management applications (such as Everlaw, Relativity, Concordance, Nebula, etc.) and electronic document sharing (such as FTP sites). • This is a hybrid to located Chicago, Illinois and will work out of Northern Trust's corporate headquarters in downtown Chicago a few days a week.

This role requires collaboration, confidence, insightfulness and tech-savvy. The candidate must have strong leadership, analytical abilities and judgment. The position also requires exceptional communication and organizational skills to work effectively and cooperatively with internal and external clients, management and staff and to coordinate business functions with other departments.
