JOB SUMMARY:

Public Rights Project (PRP) is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that helps local government officials fight for civil rights. We build their capacity to protect and advance civil rights convene and connect them on key issues and provide legal representation to help them win in court for residents. Since 2017 we've recovered over $46 million in relief for marginalized people; built a network of over 1300 government offices elected officials and community-based organizations in 50 states; trained 130 prosecutors and government lawyers in 24 states; and secured court victories on abortion immigrant workers and voting rights. Public Rights Project seeks to hire a Senior Program Manager (Legal) for California to join our team. This is a remote full-time exempt position reporting to the Director of the Civil Rights Hub. This role will help oversee the organization outreach and coordination of a statewide legal action and resource hub. The role will develop relationships with and optimize our services to local government officials and community-based organizations in the state. This role will work closely with the Directors of the Civil Rights Hub Litigation team and Election Protection Hub to ensure that statewide and local leaders know about and can use our services to help them deliver for their constituents.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Build and implement PRPs Civil Rights Hub (CRH) strategy to reach engage and support local elected and appointed officials across California.

    • Work closely with the CRH Director to aid in strategy research analysis and outreach to serve as a statewide legal resource provider and capacity hub to a variety of entities.

    • Grow PRPs network of engaged government partners across the state.

    • Identify and build relationships with local leaders and stakeholders including city attorneys and county counsel mayors and other electeds to support the advancement of legal strategy capacity and coordination.

    • Help oversee and coordinate statewide public and nonprofit coalition-building and legal action across the state.

    • Support strategic communications to increase public understanding and opinion on civil rights democracy and justice issues.

    • Monitor and analyze target local governments policy and independent litigation activity on PRPs core issue areas to inform engagement strategies and tactics.

    • Analyze the potential impact of PRPs cases and activities on target local communities.

  • Serve as project manager to support the planning execution and evaluation of key California program initiatives.

    • Develop and maintain project plans coordinate cross-functional teams and facilitate internal and external meetings

    • Manage systems to track program activities case information and grant deliverables

    • Assist CRH Director and support effective delegation and accountability structures; identify and troubleshoot barriers to progress.

  • Strong legal analysis skills including the ability to analyze case law statutes and regulations with minimal direction.

  • Represent PRP at third-party coalition conferences presentations and other networking-building events including events that require travel.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Law degree required.

  • 8 - 10+ years of experience with at least 6+ years in legal practice.

  • Experience managing people and/or running a team preferred.

  • Prior experience working in or with government officials elected officials in state or local government or in public/government affairs.

  • Experience managing large complex projects with multiple internal and external stakeholders required.

  • Prior experience tracking metrics and deliverables as well as working in coalition with government and non-government partners.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Expert detail-oriented and proactive project management skills including managing multiple work streams concurrently and ability to use electronic tools including experience or ability to learn the following systems: Google Workspace Office 365 Salesforce and Asana.

  • Strong communication and research skills both orally and in writing including drafting communication materials and leading conversation with outside partners.

  • Strong legal analysis skills including the ability to analyze case law statutes and regulations with minimal direction.

  • Team player who can work with diverse government partners community-based organizations and other advocates as well as internal teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate new relationships with partners and to steward those relationships into action.

  • Ability to manage fast-moving and complex relationships with partners inside and outside of government.

  • Ability to deliver high-quality content and produce results on a deadline.

  • Ability and eagerness to be flexible to account for unforeseen challenges and opportunities in a fast-paced and evolving legal and political environment.

  • Commitment to building a culture of diversity equity inclusion and belonging at PRP and ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • A belief in the power of state and local government to make positive change in the world and a passionate commitment to civil rights and economic justice.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:

Reports to the Civil Rights Hub Director.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Requires sitting talking and listening for up to 8 hours per day. Certain situations may require lifting items up to 20 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Fully remote organization and team. This role may require travel a few times a year to PRP events or meetings. We currently have remote staff in all continental U.S. time zones.

COMPENSATION

The determined salary range for this level 4 role is set between $102176 - $153264 exact salary will be based on candidate experience. For internal equity purposes PRP will not negotiate with candidates outside of the roles designated range.
