The Global Analytical Science function is an internal service that supports operationalizing Mars Snacking R&D growth programs. The Analytical Senior Scientist will provide technical direction and lead analytical capability building in support of R&D programs to enable quality growth, value leadership, and sustainability by developing new methods, partnerships with external laboratories and universities by conducting thorough literature reviews, intellectual property landscaping and utilizing expertise to understand and characterize new ingredients and process technologies in fermentation, alternative proteins, carbohydrates, bio-actives, colors, and upcycled ingredients. This role will collaborate with cross-functional technical partners across R&D and other functions within Supply, Commercial, Finance, Legal, Scientific and Regulatory Affairs, Mars Global Services (MGS) and Mars Advanced Research Institute (MARI).
What are we looking for?
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related discipline with 7+ years' related experience in an analytical laboratory. Experience with executing operational responsibilities of a laboratory
- Proficient in performing analytical method protocols while working in compliance to quality standards and HSE protocols.
- Previous experience effectively executing multiple projects including continuous improvement projects.
- Proven teamwork experience
Preferred Qualifications
- MS in Analytical Chemistry with 5 years of experience or PhD with 2 years of related experience in an analytical laboratory
- 10+ years in Analytical Sciences field (preferably in Food, beverage, confections, and/or snacks industry).
- Knowledge in fermentation, bio-actives, in vitro analysis, carbohydrates, and/or proteins.
What will be your key responsibilities?
- Leads projects to deliver new methods/capabilities by applying scientific rigor through extensive understanding of chemistry of ingredients (proteins, carbohydrates, fermentation, bio-actives, cell cultures, etc), products, and packaging. Expert in one or more Analytical Method areas and responsible for upskilling others to increase capabilities.
- Applies most appropriate analytical tools for experimental designs and studies. Analyzes complex samples utilizing appropriate instrumentation (e.g. Chromatography (GC, LC, IC, GPC), microscopy, imaging, material and physical characterization) and prepares insightful reports.
- Effectively develops and presents technical findings to internal peers and stakeholders. Gathers information & documents into the relevant knowledge management systems (e.g. Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN)).
- Drives cross-functional collaborations within R&D and Quality & Food Safety (Q&FS) as a technical resource. Readily applies and transfers scientific knowledge in analytical chemistry to help identify, manage, and mitigate business risk for products and processes.
- Builds expertise and benchmark through relationships with external communities.
- Promotes teamwork, coaches and mentors others.
- Responsible for on time and in full delivery of Analytical function responsibilities. Manages capital and expense budgets to meet agreed targets, develops replans and share timely updates.
- Independently develops continuous improvement and innovation strategies as it relates to Analytical Science operations, Quality Management Plan (QMP) audits and compliance, and capability building.
- Collaboratively works with Intellectual Property (IP) team, generates and maintains world class knowledge and IP strategy early on latest emerging technologies, global scientific and technological advances in areas of concern, including competitive IP awareness and monitoring.
- Share knowledge and insights with the business and partner with suppliers, universities, and research consortia to strengthen Mars Snacking's strategic goals
- Keeps the laboratory organized, clean, and safe to ensure an efficient work environment. This includes tasks such as ordering supplies, keeping track of orders in progress, identifying and communicating with potential suppliers, creating instrument and safety related documents, and conducting necessary commissioning, decommissioning and maintenance activities.
- Provides thought leadership in co-creating, refreshing, and executing mission, vision, and strategy for Analytical Science function in partnership with the Analytical Science Manager.
