Senior Software Engineer (full stack)

Background: We are in the process of rebuilding our engineering team by moving from offshore development resources back to a small team of onshore/in-house engineers. Position Summary: We are seeking an experienced, creative and disciplined Senior Software Engineer as our first hire for this mission critical onshore team. You will have a strong software engineering background but also be proficient in full stack development and competent in cloud infrastructure. You will have previous experience modernizing code bases and creating new code that is maintainable, well documented and follows modern design principles. You create code in a mindful way knowing your fellow engineers and future engineers will need to maintain and enhance it for years to come (and you don’t want your name cursed). You will collaborate with and report directly to the CTO, who oversees DevOps, technical product management and is also an individual contributor. Technology Stack: • Frontend • Angular 18+ • Typescript • Bootstrap • Tailwind • Backend • Java 8 • Jakarta EE8 / Eclipse Jersey 2.x • ChatGPT APIs • Textract • Python 3.x • Fast API • Infrastructure/Cloud (AWS) • Textract • S3 • ECS • Cloud Front • Docker • MySQL (Aurora) • etc. Projects we anticipate you contributing to: • Improve OCR processes to support additional IRS tax forms • Maintaining upgrade cycles of third party libraries, Angular, Java and Python frameworks • Assisting in the refinement of AI RAG processes to improve trust and performance • Security hardening • And a plethora of product features Position Responsibilities: • Refactor and modernize code using modern design principles to create scalable, maintainable and well documented code. • Maintain existing code as needed through defect correction, refactoring and feature enhancements • Interpret requirements, create technical documents and provide engineer level scope of work for completing objectives. • Participate in technical design; including data modeling, functional design, test criteria, UX design. • Maintain coding standards and security best practices. Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Minimum of 10 years experience in software engineering • Advanced skill in Angular, Typescript, SQL • Advanced technical problem-solving skills, coupled with a creative mindset. • Intermediate experience building and maintaining REST APIs in Java (Eclipse Jersey) and Python (Fast API) • Intermediate experience with RAG Ops (data chunking, embedding, vector databases and ChatGPT APIs) • Intermediate skill in functional testing including unit testing, integration and system testing • Proficient using AWS cloud services • Fluent in software architecture, software development processes, AGILE methodology and CI/CD processes. • Fluent in various programming design patterns such as MVC, repository pattern, factory pattern, builder pattern etc. • Fluent using Git with Github or Gitlab BONUS Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (this will set you apart): • Prior experience working for a tax services (CPA) or financial planning business • Experience using OCR (optical character recognition), specifically AWS Textract • Experience upgrading Java projects and/or maintaining a Java Spring Boot APIs • Experience improving AI responses through RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) • GitLab or similar DevOps all in one platforms • Data warehousing concepts, tools and processes such as ETL/ELT, columnar database storage, data lakes, Kimball fact and dimension modeling etc. Physical Demands: • The physical demands described here represent those that an employee must meet to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, and talk or hear. • The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and taste or smell.
