About the team:
We are looking for an experienced software engineer with a passion for Search to take a lead role in amplifying the capabilities of Turo’s search platform. The ideal candidate will bring extensive expertise in search infrastructure, showcasing a profound understanding of search algorithms, distributed systems, and scalability. Search is the storefront for Turo, and you will have the opportunity to shape the platform that powers it. You’ll help build the roadmap of the search platform, scale our current search system, and build solutions that drive Turo forward.
Our APIs, internal services, and web app are at the core of our stable of software that’s reinventing mobility. Be a member of a small team of talented engineers and designers and play a major role in shaping an exciting app that’s changing how people travel and think about car ownership.

What you will do:
- Lead the design and architecture of a high-performance search infrastructure, prioritizing scalability, reliability, and efficiency.
- Identify and prioritize opportunities to optimize existing search systems for efficiency, speed, and accuracy.
- Collaborate closely with your cross-functional teammates on the Turo Search team to define requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
- Develop and implement state-of-the-art search algorithms, enhancing search performance and relevance.
- Ensure proper technical design and documentation.
- Work efficiently in a constantly changing and growing environment where the process is fluid and creative solutions are desired.
Your profile:
- Professional experience working with Apache Lucene, ElasticSearch, OpenSearch, Solr, or other Search technologies. Under the hood experience is a strong plus.
- Bachelor's/Master’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science or related field
- Typically a minimum of 10 years experience shipping high-scale code to production.
- Fluent in at least one language - e.g. Python, Ruby, Go, C. Java and/or Kotlin are a strong plus.
- Possess strong computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, database concepts, distributed systems, and search.
- Strong communicator. Explaining complex technical concepts to designers, support, and other engineers is no problem for you.
- Enjoy solving problems and helping others meet their goals.
The SF base salary target range for this full-time position is $200,000 - $250,000 + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position in San Francisco, CA. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
