Job Description

JOB This is an advanced-journey level position in the District's Maintenance & Operations Department, incumbents are primarily responsible for performing skilled and semi-skilled work in specific areas of experience and expertise with limited supervision (e.g. plumbing, electrical, carpentry, roofing, painting, ventilating systems, alarms, boilers, etc.) for the purposes/s of maintaining facilities for students, staff and public in safe operating condition; and resolve immediate operational and/or safety concerns. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Coordinates projects related to installation, maintenance and repair work within area of their occupational specialties and other assigned duties including planning and scheduling work and equipment; May provide project lead direction to administration and other classifications (e.g. maintenance techs, trades and skilled trade's workers) for the purpose of completing projects and work orders efficiently. Develop and plan systems and/or special requests for items for the purpose of meeting various maintenance and facilities needs. Troubleshoots, inspects and maintains complex systems and equipment in one or more areas of expertise such as playground equipment, heating & ac systems, plumbing, controls, roofing, etc. for the purpose of ensuring safety and identifying necessary repairs, implementing repairs, completing repairs, keeping records, work orders and providing an ongoing program of preventive maintenance. Installs system component parts, classroom and office equipment and facility components (e.g. lighting, heating and ventilating systems, plumbing, electronic controls, electronic devices , electrical panels, heating systems, ac system, roofing, irrigation, painting, plumbing etc.) for the purpose of maintaining facilities in a safe working condition. Inspects contractors work to ensure compliance with specifications, standards and time lines. Serves as lead person to assigned maintenance support personnel and summer workers as may be required for the purpose of ensuring work is completed safely and accurately and in a timely manner. Maintains tools and equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items in safe operating condition. Prepares documentation (computerized work order system & daily work logs) (e.g. cost estimates, requisitions, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information. In their areas of expertise will construct, install and repair various items, systems and/or components requiring journey level skills in construction trades related to maintenance of facilities (e.g. electrical, plumbing, irrigation, electronics, locksmith, painting, carpentry, roofing, wall board, safety rails, doors, locks, windows, pumps, toilets, plumbing fixtures, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that items are available and in safe working condition. Requests and orders equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of required items. Responds to emergencies and call-outs as required; coordinates and monitors work of staff in areas of expertise to effect repairs for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns. Transports various items (e.g. tools, equipment, supplies, etc) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site. Work with other trades' workers as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their assigned work activities. Required to perform journey level skilled work in one or more construction trades. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:KNOWLEDGE OF: Perform work related math. Read technical information. Compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions. Solve practical problems. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes. Variety of skilled trades' e.g. mechanical, electrical, heating, air conditioning and ventilation roofing, plumbing, irrigation, concrete, carpentry, ceramic tile, masonry, etc. Safety practices and procedures. ABILITY TO: Schedule activities, meetings, and/or events. Gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a wide variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances. Work with data utilizing defined but different processes. Operate equipment using a variety of processes. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups including administration and classified staff. Be flexible to perform work within changing priorities and possess sufficient interpersonal skill to work harmoniously with staff, students, administrators, parents and others. Work with a variety of data. Utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines. Problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: ordering parts and materials from vendors. Adapting to changing work priorities. Communicating with diverse groups. Meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working as part of a team. Working with constant and sustained interruptions. There will be no make up exams offered. OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Positions in the job classification typically work 40 hours/week for 12 months/year. The duration of the eligibility list is 6 months unless extended by the Executive Director of Classified Human Resources and the Personnel Commission. Applicants selected for permanent or substitute assignments are required to pay for fingerprinting services and obtain Tuberculosis results prior to beginning work. Hayward Unified School District will provide a contribution of up to $2,500 per year to be used towards a District healthcare plan or cash in lieu of up to $1,350 per year. Full-time employees are required to purchase medical health benefits unless proof of alternate coverage is provided. Half-time and less than half-time employees may participate on a voluntary basis. The balance of health benefit costs are paid through a pre-tax payroll deduction. Dental coverage is provided free of charge for all employees working 20 hours per week, or more. Family coverage is available and any additional premium will be employee paid. Classified employees must participate in the CalPERS Retirement program. All employees are enrolled in an Employee Assistant Program (EAP). The District also offers various optional benefits including life insurance, short term disability, and a medical and dependent care flexible spending option.
