On our team you will apply engineering standard methodologies to analyze, design, develop, deploy, and support data and software solutions, and/or infrastructure implementations/upgrades. To excel in this role, you need to be passionate about data and software craftmanship and eager to understand the insurance business. You should be comfortable maintaining applications with established code bases and willing to explore modern approaches to tackle new challenges.
The Actuarial Software Engineering team at Northwestern Mutual is responsible for creating and improving systems that ensure the company can meet its financial obligations to its customers, employees, and field representatives. These systems are financial in nature, centered on risk products and benefit plans, and based on the professional knowledge of the actuary. The applications are varied, generally are mathematical, and involve working in close partnerships with technical peers and actuarial business experts. The assignment will be on a team developing data solutions to perform studies on our products & policyholders and run financial projections. You'll be part of a team that plays a crucial role in ensuring this great company continues to do great things for its customers.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Applies engineering best practices to analyze and develop data and software solutions.
  • Develops software using established development and continuous integration practices.
  • Utilizes established monitoring and automation processes.
  • Conducts code evaluations.
  • Participates in setting team standards and best practices.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics or equivalent professional experience
  • 0-2 years professional experience in SQL, C++, C#, DAX, Object Oriented design patterns
  • Flexibility to work on the Mainframe, including PL/1 and JCL
  • Familiarity with AWS cloud and associated technologies
  • Familiarity using continuous integration and deployment concepts
  • Familiarity with both Batch and Real-time application patterns
  • Strong technical skills with a continuous growth mindset and the desire to learn
  • Interested in understanding the insurance business
  • Able to mentor new team members
  • Can communicate clearly to the business

Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
