Job Description

Cox Enterprises is seeking a SQL Database Administrator to join our team, providing application and database support for Integrate Business Solutions department. As a SQL DBA at Cox, you will play a vital role in supporting our database systems, assisting the Lead DBA, and gaining valuable experience in database administration. This position offers excellent growth opportunities, as you will receive training and guidance to develop your skills and become a proficient database administrator. You will work closely with the lead developer to ensure our database infrastructure's smooth operation and optimization.
In this role, you'll perform SQL Database Administrator functions, including implementing, monitoring, and reorganizing databases. You will code, test, implement, and maintain database architectures. Execute utility requirements such as reorganization, backup and recovery. Analyze and resolve database system production problems. Analyze user requirements & statistics and participate in database design & performance evaluation reviews. Advise systems engineers on database coding issues. Prepare system documentation and may be involved in the data modeling process.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Assist in database administration: Collaborate with the senior developer to perform routine database administration tasks, including monitoring, backup and recovery, and performance tuning.
  • Database troubleshooting: Help identify and resolve database issues, such as performance bottlenecks, data inconsistencies, and system errors, under the guidance of the senior developer.
  • User management: Assist in managing user accounts, permissions, and access levels to ensure data security and integrity.
  • Data migration and integration: Participate in data migration and integration projects, ensuring accurate and seamless data transfer between systems.
  • Database optimization: Assist in optimizing database performance through index management, query tuning, and implementing best practices.
  • Backup and recovery: Assist in implementing and maintaining database backup and recovery procedures to ensure data protection and availability.
  • Documentation and knowledge sharing: Maintain accurate documentation of database structures, configurations, and procedures. Collaborate with the senior developer to share knowledge and best practices with the team.
  • Monitor all backup job logs or reports daily to identify any failures or issues impacting the ability to restore any managed database component or associated data.
  • Execute either full or point-in-time data recovery to managed databases to fully restore data availability or the system to a fully operational state to meet or exceed the recovery time (RTO) or recovery point (RPO) objectives specified in the system's service level agreement (SLA).
  • Implement and configure data replication schemes for managed systems to ensure data redundancy, alternate site processing capability, and system/data recoverability are continuously operational.
  • Install or apply the database portion of any application upgrades, new releases, software version upgrades, or other system changes.
  • Support availability and data protection of managed database systems. Respond to critical events after business hours and participate in on-call rotation.
  • Works in an operations environment with project managers on multiple projects consecutively. These projects involve coordinating database development through multiple environments and migration into production.
  • Fully competent and productive professional contributor, working independently on larger, moderately complex projects/assignments directly impacting department and area results.
  • Represent the team or group at technical and status meetings as required.
  • Maintain issues' status and resolutions in the ticketing system, ServiceNow.
  • Adhere to change management and system development lifecycle policies and procedures.
  • Participate in Disaster Recovery planning, testing, and documentation.
  • Prepare status reports for current activities and projects.
  • Install new software versions and patches, ensuring correct system configuration and operation.
  • Demonstrates data analysis skills by resolving missing/incomplete information or inconsistencies/anomalies in more complex research/data.
  • Has excellent written and verbal skills and the ability to communicate with technical and non-technical team members.
  • Timely communication of concerns and issues affecting the production environment, project schedule, and/or user acceptance of the developed application to the product manager and project manager.
  • Performs a full range of standard professional-level work that typically requires processing and interpreting. Identifies problems and possible solutions and takes appropriate action to resolve more complex, less clearly-defined issues.

Qualifications:
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline and 2 years' experience in a related field. The right candidate could also have a different combination, such as a master's degree and up to 2 years' experience; or 6 years' experience in a related field
  • 1+ year's experience in Microsoft Windows, SQL Server technologies and .Net development.
  • Ability to work with minimal direction, yet also able to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to quickly learn and implement new technologies.
