The Opportunity


As the Automation Engineer, you will be responsible for executing automation tasks related to design, implementation and the operational management of the Process Control Systems, Building Automation Systems and Automation System Infrastructure. You will characterize automation requirements and be responsible for design, budgeting, scheduling, resource management, implementation, and commissioning of the automation systems. In this role you will also be the system owner for the Process Control Systems and Building Automation Systems at the Rockville, MD site.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Manage the automation function including improvements, optimization, upgrades as well as implementation of new process control systems from the concept to commissioning and validation
  • Lead automation work for multiple projects that span a range of cost and complexity.
  • Work with industry experts/consultants to create automation specifications and standards, electrical drawings, network drawings, User Requirements, Functional Specifications and automation control strategies. Drive standardization within the department and within the company.
  • Provide hands-on technical support, diagnostics and troubleshooting functions to manufacturing operations.
  • System owner for plant wide automation systems, technical owner and administrator for process and utility equipment automation systems.
  • Perform data backups, perform server maintenance activities, and monitor performance of automation systems to proactively detect potential failures.
  • Develop operational and maintenance SOPs for the automation systems
  • Develop and maintain system lifecycle documentation for automation systems
  • Perform investigations of manufacturing deviations related to failure of automation systems and make necessary changes.
  • Provide afterhours technical and troubleshooting support as needed
  • You may be required to travel up to 10%

We set our employees up for success. To be successful in this role and help us achieve our goals, we are looking for someone with the following skills and qualifications:

  • Bachelors in Chemical, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Life Sciences or equivalent
  • A minimum of 2+ years’ experience in a related role
  • Experience with the operation and troubleshooting of automation systems including PLC and DCS systems
  • Understanding of cGMPs and engineering systems
  • Familiarity with industry standards for batch control systems, software development life cycle methodologies, 21 CFR Part 11, and GAMP
  • Ability to work with suppliers and owners on technical specifications and procurement details
  • Willingness to work with a “hands-on" approach in project construction, testing, and support
  • Capable of managing contractors to perform automation related work
  • Must have effective oral and written communication skills
  • Working knowledge of various automation platforms including DeltaV, Siemens Building Automation Systems, Honeywell, Ignition, or Allen-Bradley PLC’s
  • Computer skills: MS Office Suite, MS Project, Networks, Servers, Thin Clients

  • Preferred Experience & Qualifications

  • Experience in prioritizing, managing, and executing multiple projects utilizing sound project management methodologies
  • Capable of effectively negotiating contracts, bids, and change orders with vendors or contractors for automation systems
  • Working knowledge of GE Unicorn, Siemens PLC’s, and Historians including OSIsoft PI
  • Working knowledge of BUS communication technologies such as DeviceNet and Modbus
  • Working knowledge of OPC communication
