What we do:The Propulsion & Dynamic Systems team is responsible for design, integration, qualification, and certification of the energy storage system integration, high-voltage power distribution, electric motor, motor control electronics, drive systems, and rotor systems. The Sr. Motor Control Software/Firmware Engineer will work closely with Motor Control and Flight Controls Engineers to develop and implement software and/or firmware necessary to operate the electric motor.
This position will be required to work on-site 5 days a week.
What you can do:- Lead design, development, and implementation of control software and/or firmware for control of permanent magnet motors and induction motors
- Participate in planning and design of the Electric Power Unit (EPU)
- Lead cross-functional collaboration to develop and integrate complex hardware and software
- Lead test and verification of control software and firmware using Software-in-the-loop (SIL), hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), and dyno bench testing
- Provide technical guidance and oversight to suppliers and Supernal software team for software development life cycle
- Derive system level requirements, analysis, and traceability to align with complex software and hardware standards
- Define and mature communication and control interfaces with aircraft systems
- Collaborate with suppliers/partners on technical development topics to ensure program milestones are achieved
- Participate in system safety evaluations
- Participate in development of software plans, processes & guidelines
- Other duties as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering specialized in control and software or other related field required; Master’s or Ph.D. degree preferred
- Minimum five (5) years of relevant experience- development, design, modeling and implementation of control algorithms for electric motors (an equivalent combination of education experience may be considered)
- Experience with pulse width modulation (PWM) schemes including sine PWM and space vector PWM
- Experience working with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) systems and code generation
- Advanced knowledge of power electronics products for EV powertrain: AC/DC converters, battery chargers, inverters, EMI filters, high voltage power distribution and others
- Advanced understanding of EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) standards
- Advanced understanding of electrical engineering protocols and standards
- Advanced knowledge of DVP&R and DFMEA
- Proficiency with embedded firmware development in C/C++
- Proficient with modeling, simulation and validation using Matlab/Simulink
- Understanding of aviation communication standards and protocols
- Skilled in control system theory and its applications, including system modeling and simulation, linearization and stability analysis
- In depth knowledge and hands on experience of field-oriented control (FOC)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proactive delivery of communication and follow up
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Must have the ability to independently prioritize and accomplish work within time constraints
- Familiarity with aviation standards such as RTCA DO-178C, DO-254A; and SAE ARP4761 and ARP4754 is preferred
- Experience with multi-motor synchronization control system is preferred
- Hands-on prototyping experience is preferred
- Design experience with wide band gap devices is preferred
- Experience with 500-1200 VDC systems is preferred
- Experience working in aviation industry is preferred
- Experience working with regulatory agencies is preferred

Base pay offered may vary depending on skills, experience, job-related knowledge and location. This position is also eligible for a bonus as part of total compensation.
