Job Description

At Smartsheet, our purpose is to empower everyone to achieve more. We're hiring a UX Designer, to help teams create accessible experiences and shape the future of work in an inclusive way. Our accessibility team is an emerging, dedicated team with the goals of driving accessibility innovation in our products, aligning our company culture, and supporting our diverse community of users. We apply principles of design thinking to create engaging, valuable, and intuitive user experiences for our web and mobile apps. Designers represent the end-user and promote human-centered methodologies across the product team to design solutions that meet the needs of all users.

This role is located in our Bellevue, WA headquarters and will report to the Senior Director, Experience Design.

Who We Are:

  • The Experience Design (XD) team is a large and growing team of designers, researchers, writers, and program managers. We love what we do and help our customers love the collaborative work they do!
  • We value authenticity, passion, and collaboration, when we work with product teams and fellow XD teammates to help guide a holistic and inclusive product experience.
  • We are setting a high bar for enterprise application experience, so our customers feel empowered, inspired, and connected.

What You'll Do:

  • Create an environment of empathy and learning, inspiring teams to create engaging and equitable experiences for all users.
  • Drive the identification, scoping, and prioritization of cross-functional and product-wide accessibility improvements.
  • Balance the complex product tradeoffs between the overall user experience and the specialized needs of our users requiring accessibility provisions.
  • Document user journeys and create user stories to convey our desired UX for impaired users.
  • Create accessible design solutions to support product designers.
  • Guide product specifications and definitions to support product managers.
  • Participate in and support UX research studies with participants who use assistive technology.
  • Partner with our Customer Experience (CX) group as well as external vendors, to evaluate and document the accessibility of our value-driving user journeys.
  • Strategically identify and prioritize opportunities to align the UX of our product in terms of accessibility, and create interaction patterns to contribute to our design system for reuse.
  • Advise product area designers and review designs to ensure the use of patterns, components, and tools that create an accessible product.

What You Bring:

  • Degree in design (interaction, product, human-centered, or related) or equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years design experience, with strong information and interaction design skill.
  • 2+ years in a role focusing on digital accessibility, with examples of product impact.
  • 3+ years working within an agile or lean software development organization.
  • A portfolio that shows collaboration in your processes, ability to design for end-to-end experiences, as well as accessible UI and interactions.
  • Ability to clearly and persuasively present your designs, including design rationale and supporting research, to stakeholders who may not have an understanding of inclusive design or accessibility.
  • A systems thinking approach—you understand downstream impacts of design decisions.
  • Expertise in using and contributing to modern UX frameworks and design systems.
  • Expertise in design & prototyping tools such as Figma (primary), Protopie, Principle, InVision, Axure, or other emerging tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate user needs into business and product requirements: tasks, scenarios, journeys.
  • Strong knowledge of WCAG 2.1+ success criteria, WAI-ARIA, Section 508, and the difference between legal compliance vs. accessibility beyond compliance.
  • Experience in web accessibility testing and audit, including both automated and manual approaches, with solid knowledge of assistive technology, such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, ZoomText, Dragon, and others.
  • Experience with enterprise scale web applications and SaaS products a strong plus.

Perks & Benefits:

  • HSA, 100% employer-paid premiums, or Buy-up medical/vision and dental coverage options for full-time employees
  • Equity - Restricted Stock Units (RSUs) with all offers
  • Lucrative Employee Stock Purchase Program (15% discount)
