Staff Software Engineer

Job Description Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to office three times per week, at minimum. The Role We are the Customer Digital Identity (CDI) software engineering team within GM’s Infrastructure Engineering organization. CDI serves as an enterprise service layer platform that provides APIs to create and manage a customer’s digital presence and personal information. The platform delivers backend microservices that manage customer profiles and identity-related services across the GM ecosystem. Our team partners closely with vehicle hardware, software, and product teams within the Software and Services business unit to deliver a seamless, secure, and integrated customer experience. We are a team of industry-leading software and quality engineers, leveraging modern development methodologies and technologies to achieve breakthrough results, drive innovation, and delight customers We are seeking an experienced Staff Software Enginee r who is passionate about building and scaling a platform of backend microservices that power web and mobile products across General Motors. In this role, you will lead engineering efforts through planning, architecture and design, execution, and deployment. As a technical leader, you will not only drive complex engineering initiatives but also mentor and guide less experienced engineers, foster strong cross-team collaboration, and help cultivate a high-performing, inclusive team culture. WhatYou’llDo • Design, develop, and deliver scalable microservices and platforms for near real-time data access • Lead full lifecycle application development using standard frameworks, coding standards, and design patterns • Weigh architectural trade-offs and apply synchronous/asynchronous design patterns • Produce high-quality software that is unit tested, code reviewed, and integrated continuously • Provide technical leadership as a hands-on tech lead, mentoring and empowering engineers • Explore and pitch product ideas, drive technology initiatives, and enrich the tech stack • Initiate, plan, and execute large-scale, cross-functional, and enterprise-wide programs • Ensure adherence to engineering best practices while driving improvements in productivity, performance, and craftsmanship • Proactively identify and remediate software issues related to code quality, security, and performance tuning • Integrate solutions with existing systems, ensuring technical documentation meets organizational standards • Model organizational values and foster a collaborative, winning culture Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent professional experience • 8+ years of hands-on experience with APIs, Spring Boot, Java • 8+ years of experience with source control, release management, and the full software development lifecycle • 8+ years contributing to the architecture, design, and documentation of secure, scalable, reliable, and high-performance systems • Strong background with multi-tier production software systems, HTTP APIs and backend datastores (PostgreSQL, Redis) • Demonstrated ability to understand complex tech stacks, debug code, and troubleshoot tests • Enthusiastic about shaping and improving engineering culture from the ground up • Passionate about software development and innovation, with the ambition to grow as a technical thought leader What Will Give YouACompetitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications) • Experience with cloud platforms, especially Azure • Familiarity with container orchestration systems like Kubernetes • A track record of managing or developing distributed systems. • Experience in developing event driven systems • Experience with Azure Identity Management, including Graph API. • Experience with DataDog .
