Our vision for Staff Software Engineer - Operational Technology at BD

Reporting to Associate Director of Operational Technology for all of BD Interventional segment, the Operational Technology (OT) Staff Software Engineer will be responsible for creating and implementing software solutions to maintain and improve Operational Performance in our manufacturing facilities. This role will execute the Smart Factory technology project plans, providing leadership and support to local teams during project implementation. This individual will also be the BDI Segment Leader for managing the ongoing OT Cybersecurity Program to protect our manufacturing environments.

BDI Operational Technology initiatives will translate into measurable improvements in overall efficiency for the operation/business, metrics for this role include those associated with Site Operational Performance such as improved Service, Safety, Quality, and Cost.

Major responsibilities

  • Acts as technical resource to develop manufacturing software solutions to increase operational efficiencies at multiple BDI manufacturing sites.
  • Manages the development of Digital Manufacturing applications that can impact process technologies and manufacturing assets in support of Smart Factory initiatives across BDI.
  • Manages and reports on the execution of OT Cybersecurity activities by OT Site Leads at all BDI sites.

  • Assists OT Site Leads as necessary to complete OT Cybersecurity activities.
  • Actively collaborates as a team member in a high-performance cross functional work team environment, including plant and regional manufacturing technical resources, engineering, IT, Quality and Regulatory.
  • Acts as leader in support of and to drive OT Software Standards adoption during implementation of applications across the BDI segment.

Essential Duties (other duties as assigned)

  • Develop digital manufacturing applications for deployment across BDI sites with an emphasis on minimizing application footprint.

  • Provide oversight to all BDI OT Cybersecurity Site Leads on executing activities for protecting our manufacturing environments.
  • Lead the education and adoption of OT Standards at assigned BDI sites.
  • Contribute to and help shape the OT organization by being a thought leader on standards for deploying Smart Factory technologies enabling ease of adoption by BDI sites.
  • Lead process improvement projects delivering sustainable solutions in collaboration with site technical peers.
  • Support new technology assessments, Proof of Concept/Value pilot projects, and technology scalability plans by collaborating with Engineering, IT, Information Security, Operations, R&D, and solution vendors.

  • Provide production support and maintenance for any software solutions developed and delivered to Operations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understands and applies SDLC principles to software development for manufacturing solutions in the Medical Industry including Computer Software Validation process and activities (URS/FRS/IQ/OQ/PQ).
  • Understands basic cybersecurity principles and associated activities such as hardening systems or updating or patching manufacturing equipment.
  • Understand databases, software development, data acquisition, full tech stacks, analytics, or any other critical skill surrounding the digitization of processes for analytics.

  • Ability to establish and maintain strong, effective team relationships with multiple organizational levels across BDI manufacturing sites.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, including documentation standards, adept at articulating priorities, and able speak to stakeholders at all levels in the organization.
  • Ability to travel up to 30%

Supervision

  • Indirect - This position will have indirect supervision for site OT and IT developers to follow established software standard operating procedures as defined by OT Leadership.

Required Experience

  • Education: Four-year degree in any of the following areas of engineering: Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical engineering, Computer Science, Network Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or any other equivalent degree provided with the required experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in software development.
  • Minimum 5 years-experience within highly regulated Medical Device Manufacturing and/or Pharma Industry.

Preferred Experience

  • Database Administrator (DBA) or any equivalent role with software development experience.
  • 5 years' experience developing and validating software in the Medical Device Industry.
  • 3 years' experience in OT/IT Cybersecurity
  • General knowledge on OT and IT infrastructure for manufacturing operations
