About the Position
As an IaaS Platform Engineer II, you will be an integral part of the infrastructure team and responsible for maintaining and monitoring Columbia Sportswear's servers, storage, backups, applications, and cloud resources. The primary goal of this position is to maximize reliability, availability, and performance of the business' infrastructure, both on-premises and in various cloud providers. This is a mostly technical and operations (maintenance and break/fix) based role, you will work with various teams on both short- and long-term improvement projects. You will need excellent problem-solving and communication skills working in a team-oriented environment.
This role involves a high degree of complexity. You must have the ability to self-direct and prioritize your workload based on the needs at hand. You will participate in a regular on-call rotation for high priority events as part of your normal duties.
HOW YOU'LL MAKE A DIFFERENCE
- You'll be asked to help analyze very common business processes and practices and find ways to make them more efficient and easier using on and off the self-tools as well as automation systems
- Deploy and support on-premises and Cloud infrastructure solutions
- Work with senior engineers to assist in design and implementation of on-premises and Cloud infrastructure
- Learn existing solutions and provide improvement feedback to design engineers
- Perform system reviews, aid in evaluating implementations, and provide feedback about potential improvements
- Define and evangelize system optimizations and best practices to improve reliability and performance. Develop automation, processes, and tools designed to make responding to and resolving incidents simpler and more robust
- Participate in technical and business discussions relative to future architecture direction aligning with business goals
- Review exceptions and makes recommendations to architectural standards with the team
- Prepare documentation and guides that can be used across teams with varying levels of technical knowledge
- Occasionally exceed 8 hours per day and/or 40 hours per week. Evening meetings/weekend work occasionally occur
- Participate in an on-call rotation for solving Priority 1 and 2 problems when they arise
YOU ARE
- Experienced in supporting scalable and highly available infrastructure systems and application architectures, with hands-on experience working with on-premises and cloud-based services in a highly available and scalable production environment
- Self-motivated, self-directed, and committed to improving your skills
- Eager to learn and open explore various projects outside of your job scope
- Innovative with strong troubleshooting skills and good judgement to solve various complex problems
YOU HAVE
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or in "STEM" Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) or a minimum of 3-5 years of technical experience in customer facing datacenter architecture, delivery, and operational services in environments utilizing Cisco, Dell EMC, VMWare, Azure Cloud, Windows Server
- Strong communication skills to work with customers and clearly help drive solutions
- A solid understanding of compute, storage, back up and Windows Server operating systems. Knowledge of automation frameworks and Linux experience is a plus
- Strong troubleshooting skills to help teams work towards correcting a design defect or down system
- An operational understanding and experience with VMWare, Windows Operating systems, and Azure/AWS deployments
- Solid understanding of platform design, including the operational trade-offs of various designs
- The ability to support evolving cloud workloads in Microsoft Azure as part of code-as-a-service
- Knowledge and/or operation of ERP systems, SAP in particular. Experience with 24/7 retail ERP a bonus
- RedHat or other Li nux distributions used in an enterprise
- CommVault backup experience, or experience running backups in general for a large (2000+ server) distributed infrastructure
- Knowledge on how to support evolving cloud workloads in Microsoft Azure as part of code-as-a-service
- Experience working in an agile way
