WSP is initiating a search for a full-time Traffic Engineer to join our strong and dedicated team of national traffic experts to help lead the growth of the traffic department in our Minneapolis, Minnesota office. Your Impact
  • Perform professional traffic engineering work and conduct investigations and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, roadways, intersections, signage, signals, pavement markings, and transportation corridors to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
  • Develop and design innovative concepts for strategic intersection and corridor improvements, including near term initiatives and longer-term capital improvement projects and studies, that require coordination with authorities, sub-consultants, and clients.
  • Design communications networks and traffic signal improvements to facilitate remote, real time corridor operations.
  • Develop or incorporate advanced modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality of end-users, transportation vehicles/systems, and incorporate future-ready solutions with traffic engineering design standards.
  • Work as an individual or as part of a cross-functional team of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects, provide technical support to WSP teams within the Central Region and other national offices by contributing to large scale projects and providing high-quality deliverables to private sector clients.
  • Verify the characteristics of a site, providing technical assistance on traffic engineering studies, capacity analyses, traffic complaint investigation, traffic plan review, signal system design, monitoring and control, and operations analysis to ensure roadways are designed in a safe and efficient way and the driver is provided with all the necessary information and safety metrics to help ensure that their driving experience is safe and efficient.
  • Work closely with developers and builders to determine the impact that a new structure, development, or construction project might have on the road system and make recommendations to mitigate or offset the impact.
  • Assist with systems engineering and design of Intelligent Transportation Systems including Connected (CV) Vehicle applications.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
  • Assist with development and scoping of medium-sized projects.
  • Provide guidance and training to entry-level engineers.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations that explain research, findings, and recommendations to improve, prevent, control, restore, or address design and/or construction issues or opportunities.
  • Comply with regulatory requirements pertaining to the data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and record compliance and retention.
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.
  • Remain current in latest traffic engineering techniques and practices.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post education experience in engineering and prior traffic design experience.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Proficient knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices, process, and design/build related to traffic control equipment, capacity and operational analysis, project management, and related communications systems.
  • Working knowledge of relevant roadway transportation construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
  • Task lead experience with small to mid-level projects including tracking hours and expenses for project work.
  • Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations on various aspects of the construction and design of transportation corridors, applying applicable regulations and policies.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Highly capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, AutoCAD, Microstation, or similar software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
  • Ability to assertively direct others in the field such as subcontractors and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Engineering.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) License with Minnesota Board of AELSLAGID
  • Professional Traffic and Operations Engineering (PTOE) License
  • Experience managing small to mid-size projects.
