Summary AC Transit is actively recruiting for the position of Upholsterer A. Under supervision of the Maintenance Foreman, this position, repairs or replaces upholstery and fabrics in District vehicles; performs other related duties as required. Representative Functions • Measures, cuts and sews padding and covering materials to required sizes and shapes of seats and seat backs. • Follows pattern or makes pattern when necessary. • Fabricates driver's curtains and attaches rollers and grommets. • Fabricates mail pouches, janitorial trash collection bags and protective clothing. • Works with cloth, vinyl, canvas and leather. • May make material and labor cost estimates on big jobs. • Recovers worn arm rests. • Sews or replaces loose piping or welts. • Patches small cuts and holes. • Maintains records of work performed and material used. • Remove stains with cleaning solution. • Performs other related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications Education:Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade. Experience: Two (2) years experience in fabrication or repair of upholstery or seat covers, OR six (6) months experience a an Upholster "B" with AC Transit. Skilled in: measuring and cutting from patterns; use of electric shears, air staple guns and heavy-duty sewing machines. Ability to:Write legibly; understand and following oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships. License Requirements: Must possess or obtain and maintain valid California Class C Driver's License. Special Requirement:Must possess or obtain all hand tools necessary to perform the duties of the position. Additional Information Physical Requirements:Frequently lift and carry objects weighing 50 lbs.; continually walk, stand, sit, push, pull, climb steps, balance, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, power-grasp, and turn objects; frequently hold and safely manipulate a variety of hand and electronic tools; Licenses/Certifications/Special Requirements. Pension:All AC Transit employees participate in a lifetime defined benefit pension. All employees hired on or after January 1, 2020, may be in the District's Tier II pension plan covered by the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA). As such, he/she may be required to contribute a small portion of annual income towards the cost of his/hers District pension.
