General Summary
The VFX Assistant Editor is responsible for supporting the VFX Editor in dailies ingest and export while also preparing, maintaining, and documenting sequences and elements of shots turned over from Editorial to the VFX department. 

Job Functions 

  • Collaborate with VFX Editor to prepare and maintain sequence and shot turnovers to VFX, including all VFX elements and reference plates, documenting in detail the notes from editors and directors about VFX work required for each shot.
  • Verify count sheets and plate line-up information to translate data into the online shot tracking database (ShotGrid); troubleshooting issues with the Production Editorial team.
  • Maintain Avid ref sequences to represent directors’ creative intent for each shot at correct frame length for final delivery.
  • Update sequences with any changes to the cut and communicate changes to the VFX department in coordination with VFX Editor.
  • Assist VFX Editor by inserting VFX works-in-progress and finals into master cut sequences, confirm timing, line-ups, and ensure the work matches the latest turnover references.    
  • Perform quality control checks of all VFX shots as they are submitted for reviews.  
  • Assist VFX Editor with any necessary VFX Editorial reviews for VFX supervisors, editors, and directors.  
  • Maintain database of shot turnover/finals sheets to be used as documentation for final confirmation.  
  • In collaboration with VFX Production, the VFX Editor, and Production Editorial, document the VFX Editorial workflow; suggesting improvements where appropriate.
  • Provide support to digital artists as needed. 

Qualifications 

  • 2+ years VFX editing experience on feature films or television.  
  • Experience working with Avid Media Composer.
  • Proficient organization and management of visual/digital data.  
  • Familiar with shot tracking database systems (ShotGrid, a plus), Word, Excel, and other productivity software tools.

  • Work environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee works under typical office conditions and is exposed to variable indoor temperatures. The noise level is usually quiet or moderate.
