Job Description
• Definition:
• Coded welding refers to welding that has been performed by a welder who has passed awelding code certification. This certification typically follows industry standards set by organizations like theAmerican Welding Society (AWS),International Organization for Standardization (ISO), or specific national or industry standards (such asASME, EN, or API).
• The welder is tested for their ability to meet the specific requirements outlined in the welding codes, which assess factors like welding technique, safety, quality, and material properties.
• Requirements:
• Welder Certification: The welder must undergo testing (usually through practical exams or "welding procedures") and demonstrate their ability to meet the required standards. This may include tests for the ability to weld specific materials, in certain positions, or using specific welding techniques (MIG, TIG, Stick, etc.).
• Welding Procedure Specification (WPS): In coded welding, the work is done in compliance with a detailed WPS, which specifies the type of welding process, materials, dimensions, and other conditions to ensure the weld is of high quality.
• Inspection & Testing: The welded joints are often subject tonon-destructive testing (NDT), such as ultrasonic testing (UT), X-rays, or dye penetrant tests, to verify the quality and integrity of the weld.
• Industries:
• Coded welding is critical in industries where safety, structural integrity, and performance are of utmost importance. These includeoil and gas, aerospace, nuclear, pressure vessel manufacturing, andshipbuilding.
• Projects requiring high-quality, reliable welds, such as those involving pressure vessels, pipelines, and structural steel, must often be carried out by coded welders.
• Examples:
• A welder working on anuclear reactoror ahigh-pressure boilermust be a coded welder to ensure the welds meet strict safety standards.
A welder working onoffshore oil rigsorgas pipelinesmust also hold a coded certification to ensure the structural integrity of the welds in harsh environments
