Why we need you and what you’ll be responsible for:
With a record backlog of high performance, aluminum boats to build for the military and first responders, SAFE Boats need experienced Aluminum Welders/Fabricators to apply their expertise to our amazing products.
The Welder/Fabricator 4 uses welding and other tools and equipment to join metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal to build boats. Position is responsible for the daily coordination of assigned area. In addition, this position will be responsible for maintaining a safe work environment, ensuring standard work is being performed, and identifying and resolving quality issues. This position can apply their experience to problem solve and complete advanced tasks/work effectively and efficiently with little to no supervision.
What you will be doing:
Clamp, hold, tack-weld, grind component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
• Remove rough spots from work pieces, using portable grinders.
• Chip or grind off excess weld or spatter, using hand scrapers or power chippers & portable grinders.
• Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions with outstanding quality
• Complete welding tasks at or above quality standards consistently and at or below expected timeframes for a master craftsperson
• Proactively identifies upcoming issues, resolves, and implements future plans to prevent them from happening again.
• Problem solves and trouble shoots challenging builds
• Understands and utilizes experience on a wide variety of previous SAFE Boats builds, has strong understanding of and vast experience with SAFE Boats products.
• Operate safety equipment and use safe work habits.
• Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments, using processes such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc & plasma arc.
• Can trouble shoot and resolve minor equipment and tool issues independently
• Position and secure work pieces, using hoists, cranes, wire, and banding machines or hand tools.
• Monitor the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material.
• Expert in general safety practices, knowledgeable in SBI safety handbook and utilizes expert safety precautions with all tools and processes
• Able to set up and/or verify settings on production machines and equipment
• Operates a wide variety of handheld and power-assisted tools and production fixtures
• Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position
• Effectively communicates with Team Members, Leads and their Supervisor/ Manager
• Mentor and trains less experienced welders/fabricators
• Assists leadership in developing standards and procedures
What we need (Required Skills):
Advanced knowledge and expertise in aluminum welding
• Superior knowledge in standard build practices in comparable manufacturing environments
• Advanced in all complex shop skills/tasks
• Experience with a very wide variety of SAFE Boats products- previous and current
• Follows directions and procedures with no supervision consistently
• Adheres to all procedures and safe work practices
• Problem solves complex tasks within the department
• Currently leading team members at Dept. Lead or Supervisor’s direction
• Intermediate knowledge of math for manufacturing and measurements
Experience and Education:
• Any combination of training, education, or experience equivalent to 10 or more years of experience in aluminum boat building or a similar industry
• 5 years or more of Aluminum experience required, GMAW (MIG) preferred
• 3 or more years of experience at SAFE Boats International as a level 4 or higher Welder/Fabricator
• 2 or more years in a leadership role or capacity in the aluminum boat building industry
• Requires superior working knowledge in the usage of production machinery, common hand tools, handheld power tools and fabricating equipment.
• Able to read and understand blueprints and weld symbols
• Exceptions can be made at the discretion of Management
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Move 40 lbs.
• Grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, crawling, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening and hearing ability and visual acuity.
• Bend, stoop, squat and stretch to complete tasks
• Requires superior working knowledge in the usage of production machinery, common hand tools, handheld power tools and fabricating equipment
• Able to read and understand blueprints and weld symbols
• Experience in marine industry/boat building preferred
• Ability to pass a welding skill test appropriate for the position
• Ability to get underway with high-speed watercraft in variable weather conditions
