See below for important information regarding this job. Duties Performs a variety of tasks involved in packing and repacking non-hazardous and/or hazardous materials and items. Selects proper container and methods of packing, cushioning and follows specialized packing procedures. Examines any prepackaged items to determine whether any repacking or over-packing is required, consolidates shipments; and applies certification, identification and shipping data. Applies a wide variety of packing methods and techniques including blocking and bracing based on the search and application of regulations covering the packing and transporting of hazardous materials. May pack, preserve, or re-pack material or items where techniques and procedures are standard and/or require little deviation from established methods. May perform receiving, storing, shipment, and distribution of a variety of bin supplies, materials, equipment, and commodities using material handling equipment to include fork lift, stock selectors, etc. Requirements Conditions of employment Must be a U.S. citizen Tour of Duty: Set Schedule Security Requirements: Non-Critical Sensitive Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination, where reciprocity cannot be applied; unfavorably adjudicated background checks will be grounds for removal. See https://www.tsa.gov/real-id for more information. Operating Material Handling Equipment (MHE) is a condition of employment. You must pass the required training to operate MHE. Failure to pass training will result in termination of employment. Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Material Handling Equipment (MHE) license. Must be able to obtain and maintain licenses and/or certifications required by the installation, federal, state, and local laws. Qualifications Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: I perform the common tasks of the job but under close supervision, such as applying markings, labels and certifications in accordance with written guidance; select appropriate materials for packing. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Conditions: Work is generally performed on hard surfaces and in areas that require standing for long periods of time and requires stooping, bending, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The incumbent frequently lifts and carries parts, equipment, and packed containers that weigh up to 40 pounds. Assistance is requested if it is necessary to lift and carry an item exceeding 40 pounds or bulky items of unusual size/shape. Weight handling equipment may also be used such as pallet jacks, vacuum lifts, hand trucks, etc Working Conditions: Generally work in well lighted, heated, and ventilated areas. They occasionally work outside or in areas that are drafty and poorly lighted. The work is sometimes dusty, dirty, and greasy. They are frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, and bruises. When working with packing foams or various types of preservatives, packers may be exposed to noxious fumes, skin irritants, and flammable chemicals. In certain work situations involving hazardous materials, they wear protective clothing, respirators, and other specialized protective devices, in addition to their basic protective equipment (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses and shoes, and ear plugs). Incumbent may be required to handle hazardous and radioactive material. Drug-Free Workplace Policy The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) is committed to maintaining a safe, drug-free workplace. All DLA employees are required to refrain from illegal drug use on and off duty. DLA conducts pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, and random drug testing. Applicants tentatively selected for employment in testing designated positions will undergo a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Refusal to undergo testing or testing positive for illegal drugs will result in withdrawal of the tentative job offer and a six-month denial of employment with DLA from the date of the drug test. Employees in drug testing designated positions are subject to random drug testing. The DLA drug testing panel tests for the following substances: marijuana, cocaine, opiates, heroin, phencyclidine, amphetamines, methamphetamines, fentanyl, norfentanyl, methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), and opioids. ADVISORY: Use of cannabidiol (CBD) products may result in a positive drug test for marijuana. DLA employees are subject to Federal law and under Federal law, Marijuana is a Schedule I drug and is illegal.
