Summary This position is in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Chillicothe VA Medical Center (VAMC). The position is in the Construction & Maintenance Shop (C&M), Facilities Management Service (FMS) and works under the direct supervision of the C&M Supervisor. The primary purpose of the position involves journeyman painting work in support of activities of Facilities Management Services. Learn more about this agency Duties Duties and Responsibilities Incumbent has journeyman responsibilities in the painting trades. Determines the methods and techniques, devices, and materials necessary to do the complete job. Prepares surfaces for painting by scraping, hand and machine sanding, wire brushing, (washing - not for entire room, only wipe down of furniture and other articles), dusting, applying paint remover, filling cracks and nail holes, etc. Prepares coating materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending, and mixing in various additives. Applies coating materials with any of the accepted trade devices, brushes, rollers, spray guns, etc. Ensures that the coating mixtures meet matched texture, decorative thickness, and level requirements. Paints indoor and outdoor surfaces such as metal, wood, concrete, plaster, etc. Maintains and keeps all equipment, tools, and areas occupied by the equipment that pertain to his work in an orderly manner. Cuts and installs various types of glass and other miscellaneous duties as assigned by his supervisor. Prepares surfaces for paper hanging by sanding, scraping, and sizing as specified for material to be applied. Applies trades and practice for hanging the paper, vinyl, etc., in correct manner by measuring and matching patterns as required. Responsible for completion of all Paint Shop PM annual/monthly equipment work orders. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: 7:00am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday Position Description Title/PD#: Painter/PD92984A Physical Requirements: Prepares and coats surfaces from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms, and where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard-to-reach places. This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets-up materials and equipment that weigh up to 5 kilograms (10 pounds). Occasionally, may handle materials and equipment that weigh 18 kilograms (40 pounds) and over. Working Conditions: The work is done inside and outside, and dirt, spray and fumes are usually present. May be required to prepare and coat surfaces outside in inclement weather. May occasionally be required to wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable. Frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. May occasionally be exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Physical or muscular effort in performing duties includes fatigue producing actions such as painting overhead, lifting, pulling, pushing, stooping, and working in cramped positions. Must work in an area with unpleasant fumes and thus wear a face mask to prevent injury or illness due to fumes and dust. Performs work from ladders and scaffolds.
