As the Supervisory Data Scientist in CPSC’s Analytics Center of Excellence, you advance the agency’s mission by guiding AI‑enabled risk detection, data governance, and analytics efforts. You collaborate with program offices, lead standards discussions, support cloud‑native modernization, and provide expert insight on high‑visibility projects, balancing long‑term data strategy with rapid response needs.

Duties
This position is officially titled Supervisory Data Scientist. The working title is Supervisory Data & Analytics Lead.
The Supervisory Data & Analytics Lead is directly responsible for leading, coordinating, and directing complex, mission-critical programs and their associated projects. The incumbent applies executive-level leadership, strategic planning, and program execution skills to manage initiatives that are national in scope, high in visibility, and central to the agency’s mission.
The Supervisory Data & Analytics Lead:
Lead the execution of CPSC’s enterprise data strategy, including data governance, standards, and metadata requirements.
Oversee data lifecycle management across acquisition, storage, transformation, retention, archival, and disposition.
Direct agencywide data quality efforts, establishing metrics, monitoring processes, and remediation strategies.
Serve as Vice Chair or Acting Chair of the Data Governance Board and lead governance decisions impacting enterprise operations.
Facilitate AI governance activities, including evaluation, documentation, risk monitoring, and compliance with federal AI and data policies.
Oversee analytics enablement and adoption of advanced analytic tools and AI/ML solutions across the agency.
Guide enterprise evidence‑building and internal data sharing to strengthen evaluation, rulemaking, and mission‑critical analytics.
Ensure quality, transparency, privacy, and compliance of open‑data publications and public‑facing datasets.
Lead high‑visibility, mission‑critical data and analytics programs with agencywide impact, including multiyear strategic initiatives.
Represent the Chief Data Officer and CPSC in interagency councils, federal AI/data governance forums, and other cross‑government engagements.
Direct supervisory functions, including workforce planning, performance management, and leadership of multidisciplinary teams.
Provide authoritative technical guidance on data architecture, analytical methods, AI/ML evaluation, and enterprise data integration.

As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year supervisory probationary period during which we will evaluate your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest. the needs and interests of the CPSC;
whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the CPSC or the Government; and
whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.
Upon completion of your probationary period your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.
Qualifications
In addition to the mandatory education requirement, all applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.
Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
GS-15: 1) Leading enterprise-level data, AI/ML, and advanced analytics initiatives central to mission delivery; 2) Directing complex, multi-phase technical projects requiring advanced data science, emerging technologies, and modernization of legacy systems; 3) Implementing enterprise data governance, lifecycle management, and data quality frameworks; AND 4) Experience demonstrating the ability to translate strategy into execution, influence high-level decisions, and foster responsible AI and data-informed decision making.

Education
Mandatory Education Requirement. All applicants must meet one of the following requirements to qualify:
A. A bachelor's or higher degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown in paragraph A above, plus additional education or appropriate experience.
There is no substitution for specialized experience at this grade level.

CPSC headquarters employees (Bethesda, MD) will be relocating to 441 G Street NW, Washington, DC. This position will transition to the new location upon completion of the move.
