Summary Southern Arizona VA Health Care System in Tucson, AZ is hiring a Medical Instrument Technician Supervisor to serve in our Imaging Department under the Diagnostic Imaging Service Line. This assignment assumes full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the work of subordinate technicians. Reviews and assures ultrasound section meets accreditation. Coordinates the flow of patients through the ultrasound section by efficient assignment of work and maximum utilization of staff and ultrasound equipment. Expedites the examinations of acutely ill patients by communicating and working with Radiology staff, nursing, and radiologists. Works with other services to meet their imaging needs as well as from locations outside the radiology department/medical center. Performs ultrasound procedures in the Ultra Sound section when staffing levels require the incumbent to do so. As staffing dictates, incumbent may be required to work off tours (PM, AM, Holiday shifts). Ensuring that patient care is continued without delay or interruption. Plans in-service programs for technical staff based on parameters set by the Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, Chief Technologist, Clinical Directors, or Radiology Service Chief. Oversees image transmission and acquisition process to ensure that all ultrasound images are transmitted into Picture Archiving (PAC's) system. Performs quality assurance on imaging equipment and assists the physicist as needed performing quality assurance on all ultrasound equipment. Coordinates with Biomedical Engineering or Quality Management technologist to schedule routine maintenance, repairs, and evaluations. Assesses and reviews requisitions with clerical staff and technologists, interacts with requesting physicians and radiologists regarding requests when necessary. Effectively communicates verbally and through example and attitude, the goals and mission of the service to employees under their supervision. Ensures activities of division are carried out to meet the goals of the department in a timely manner. Advises employees under their direct supervision of performance requirements. Such as informing of their progress in meeting these requirements, provide corrective interviews regards to inadequate performance or conduct. Initiate fact-finding investigations and works with Human Resource Specialists to ensure appropriate actions are taken when necessary. Performs evaluation of employees under their supervision, i.e. competency reviews, performance appraisals, and training requirements. Oversee image transmission and acquisition process to ensure that all ultrasound images are transmitted into Picture Archiving (PAC's) system, including review of appropriate codes. Oversees Imaging quality assurance Program. Resolves conflicts within their jurisdiction as appropriate; refers problems to the Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist or Chief Technologist when necessary. Approves vacation and leave requests while maintaining adequate staffing levels. Ensure all staff are fully trained on imaging equipment and procedures. Coordinates shift coverage, room rotations, and monthly work schedule to ensure coverage and cross-training needs are met. Responsible for the quality assurance of the image (positioning/label/technique/network information) prior to transmission to the PACs (picture archiving) network. Ensures the monitoring of the activities within the diagnostic section and takes appropriate action as required to ensure their efficient and effective operation. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, on call required Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade). English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS - 10 At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) at that level. In addition, the candidate MUST demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): 1. Advanced knowledge of complex and non-standard treatment and examination procedures and techniques. *2. Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and examination program. *3. Ability to evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations. *4. Ability to manage the fiscal matters of the functions supervised (which would include fund controls, contracts, and equipment expenditures), forecast resource and equipment needs, and administer the allocated budget. *5. Knowledge of and ability to provide the full range of supervisory duties which would include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed; performance evaluation; selection of staff; and recommendation of awards, advancements, and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions. Preferred Experience: Two (2) years of supervisory experience. Previous VA experience preferred.
