2023 Operations Summer Internship

The Role

We are excited to offer an opportunity for a diverse group of talented students to join the internship program at Schonfeld. You’ll spend ten weeks with an experienced Operations team within the Schonfeld Operations division where you will work directly with Operations senior management and across peer groups in all areas, while being immersed in the culture and atmosphere of Schonfeld, working alongside talented professionals on high profile projects. 

The Operations team at Schonfeld take on a wide range of responsibilities and challenges. They are responsible for the trade life cycle and that includes everything from supporting trading and portfolio managers all the way through to trade settlement. In operations you will collaborate with many peers from different departments, such as but not limited to Risk, Portfolio Financing and Fund Accounting. Operations touches upon many different facets as we are responsible for ensuring the investment side of the business can deploy their investment strategies. The Operations team is best in class in supporting policies and procedures for optimal efficiency. 

Depending on your interests, you will be assigned to one of three teams:  

• Middle Office 
  • Assist with Trade Support, trading position accuracy, analysis of trading related fees 
  • Work with trade settlement of physical securities, review and affirm cashflows for equity swap trading activity 
  • Documentation of procedure manuals to support the trade lifecycle for various instruments 
  • Opportunity to contribute to tactical initiatives such as the implementation of reconciliations and other tooling, utilizing VBA, FTP, APIs, etc. 

• Back Office
  • Help to implement best in class reconciliation across cash, positions, and trades
  • Gather data and aid on numerous ad hoc projects and firmwide initiatives
  • Gain knowledge of the full trade life cycle from trade capture to settlement and ensure trade flow is accurately processed across all systems 

• Risk & Controls 
  • Assist Account Master team and Operations work with all account onboarding throughout the firm
  • Work with stakeholders to document list of executing brokers by various classifications and fund ownerships.
  • Set up static data that drives trade bookings and provide the overall documentation for all high-risk areas of Operations 

What you’ll do   

This is a prime opportunity to learn various facets of the different business departments, acquire knowledge of how various asset types work and function, how data is retrieved and communicated with sell side counterparties, gain an appreciation for all components of data and its investment value to a hedge fund. In working on these operational projects, you will interact and liaise to helping us achieve a scalable infrastructure that is efficient and its data integrity in high regard for completeness and accuracy. 

What you’ll bring? 

Having a keen analytical eye with high regard for attention to detail. Organizational skills as well as an appreciation for data cataloging and classifications would be instrumental in these projects. A natural curiosity for learning and understanding how things work and systems interact. Furthermore, on the technical side, advanced Excel skills, /VBA, and some SQL querying logic would go a long way in the ability to fulfill project requirements. 

Our Internship 

The Schonfeld summer internship provides students with a unique opportunity to experience Schonfeld, our work, our people, and our culture. Interns will typically join a small team and will spend 10 weeks at Schonfeld from June - August. 

Each summer intern will work on a tailored project that will provide them with real world experience. We provide all interns with a dedicated mentor and manager to help them navigate the summer successfully. Interns will also participate in our learning program, the Sapphire: Summer Session, which aims to provide tangible skills training and education on various functions across the firm and in the workplace. Along with the hands-on guidance and support from managers and mentors, interns will participate in weekly networking events, engage with our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Alliance, attend panel discussions, and have many opportunities to get to know Schonfeld’s core values in practice.

Who we are  

Schonfeld Strategic Advisors is a multi-manager platform that invests its capital with Internal and Partner portfolio managers, primarily on an exclusive or semi-exclusive basis, across four trading strategies; quantitative, fundamental equity, tactical trading and discretionary macro & fixed income. We have created a unique structure to provide global portfolio managers with autonomy, flexibility and support to best enable them to maximize the value of their businesses. 

Over the last 30 years, Schonfeld has successfully capitalized on inefficiencies and opportunities within the markets. We have developed and invested heavily in proprietary technology, infrastructure and risk analytics and continue to capitalize on new opportunities. In 2021 we launched our newest strategy, discretionary macro & fixed income as part of the continual growth of Schonfeld’s investible universe. Our portfolio exposure has expanded across the Americas, Europe and Asia as well as multiple asset classes and products.  

The annual base pay for this role is expected to be between $60,000 and $75,000 which will be prorated based on internship start and end date. The expected base pay range is based on information at the time this post was generated. Actual compensation for the successful candidate will be determined based on a variety of factors such as skills, qualifications and experience and level of education.
