The Aerospace Corporation is hiring a Graduate-level Electromechanical Control Intern for an opportunity in El Segundo, CA. Internships and Co-ops are a key strategy in our college recruiting program. Aerospace offers a variety of challenging opportunities for candidates currently pursuing a degree in STEM disciplines. Internship opportunities are paid full time positions for a minimum 10-weeks in the summer.
The Vehicle Systems Division (VSD) sits at the center of the ideas and data behind current and future systems supplying innovative research and development; technical evaluations during the acquisition process; conceptual and detailed design; assembly, integration, and test; and operational support. Comprised primarily of highly-trained mechanical and aerospace engineers, VSD provides national expertise in the areas of vehicle engineering; guidance, navigation, and controls; robotics; electro-mechanical devices; embedded systems; fluid mechanics; propulsion; thermal control; orbital mechanics; mechanisms; structures; structural dynamics; and dynamic environments.
The Electromechanical Control Department (ECD) performs both technical studies and characterization tests of control system hardware, in which you will support customer programs. ECD specializes in hardware used for spacecraft and launch vehicles including GPS Receivers, IMUs, Electric Motors, Gyroscopes, Accelerometers, Gimbals, Steering Mirrors, Star Trackers, Encoders & Resolvers, Capacitive & Inductive Sensors, and Reaction Wheels. As a technical intern, you will participate in the testing, modeling, simulation, and analysis of electromechanical control systems and components in support of various satellite or launch vehicle programs.

What you'll be doing
- Participate in the testing, modeling, simulation, and analysis of electromechanical control systems and components in support of various satellite or launch vehicle programs.
- Apply engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to a variety of problems.
- Verify contractor designs, approaches, and overall system performance. Tasks may include attending and participating in technical interchange meetings, requirements reviews, design reviews, readiness reviews, pedigree reviews, and acceptance reviews.
- Develop, operate, and maintain laboratory resources.
- Perform technical studies and experimental investigations in a highly-structured team setting.
- Written reports and oral presentations will be required, including the documentation and presentation of the design, development, execution, and results of technical studies and experimental investigations.
- Tasks may include the development of independent analytical models and analysis tools.
- Tasks may include the development of laboratory experiments, characterization of electromechanical hardware, and technical review of experimental data.
- Tasks may involve interaction with other technical disciplines, working independently or as part of a team.
- Tasks may involve interaction with government customers, program management, and contractors.
- Must be able to represent the department and sub-division during these interactions and project a professional image.
What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements:
- Currently enrolled fulltime in an accredited college/university program pursuing a Master's degree in engineering, physics, computer science or related discipline
- Availability to work full-time for a minimum of 10 weeks outside of university term. Ability to return to a degree program after completion of the internship.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0
- Experience and/or coursework involving feedback control systems
- Familiarity with basic hardware and tools, including MATLAB/Simulink, LabVIEW, and SolidWorks
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance; which is issued by the US government. U.S citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
- GPA of 3.5 or higher
- Familiarity with one or more of the following: mechanical design, structural analysis, servo control, motors, electronics, signal processing, guidance and navigation, GPS receivers and associated algorithms, small satellite development, or robotics
- Hands-on experience with electromechanical devices
- Knowledge of general laboratory safety protocol
- Knowledge and use of measurement and test equipment
- Knowledge of electrical circuits, PCB design, and soldering
- Proficiency with any of the following tools/languages: NX or SolidWorks, ANSYS, MATLAB/Simulink, LabVIEW, dSPACE, C/C++, Python, EAGLE
- DoD Secret Clearance

We offer a competitive compensation package where you'll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to our business. The grade-based pay range for this job is listed below. Individual salaries within that range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge and skills.

$19.85 - $35.00 - $40.25
