Summary This position is located in a National Park Service Unit, National Capital Parks- East, in the Maintenance Division. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for National Park Service Unit is May-January but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: End of May Learn more about this agency Duties The major duties of the Automotive Worker include, but are not limited to, the following: Perform Maintenance repair and overhaul and work on automobiles, truck tractors and other vehicles including gasoline and diesel engines with mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic and electronic controlled engine systems Troubleshoot repairs and overhauls major components and systems such as engines, transmissions and differentials, transaxles, electric fuel systems, emission controls systems, and computer related electrical systems, braking systems and other assemblies using a wide variety of diagnostic systems evaluate and repair specified automotive systems. Runs operational checks on components of automotive systems, vehicles, and equipment to effectively diagnose problems occurring in automotive systems Creates an effective pm System for equipment and vehicles Requirements Conditions of employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 2 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or(c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT) Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (includes blueprinting and reading) Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Troubleshooting Condition of Employment (Requirement): Ability to lift 50lbs: Applicants must demonstrate a degree of physical fitness necessary to perform duties. This includes ability to work for extended periods outdoors in all weather conditions, ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, climb and lift and move heavy items (in excess of 50 pounds) to chest level (SCREEN OUT). Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1560 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS). If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1560 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1560 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility. The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1560 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1560 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM. Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations. Physical Demands: The incumbent makes repairs which often require them to work in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions, and the work performed frequently involves standing for long periods of time, bending, stooping, crawling under vehicles, and making repairs in tight spaces. The incumbent frequently lifts, handles, and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and occasionally moves moderately heavy items weighing up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds) with assistance or with mechanical devices. This is a match to the physical effort described at the grade 8 level in the job grading standard. At that grade level the incumbent makes repairs which often require them to work in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions, and they frequently stand for long periods of time, bend, stoop, crawl under vehicles, and make repairs in tight spaces. They frequently lift, handle, and carry parts and equipment weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and occasionally they move moderately heavy items with assistance including objects weighing up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Working Conditions: Work is usually performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise, and fumes from vehicles, and occasionally the work is performed outside under adverse weather conditions. The incumbent is continually exposed to dirt, dust, and grease, and to the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, and bruises, cuts, and strains. To reduce the dangers and irritations the incumbent follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as safety shoes and glasses, and respirators.
