Summary
The Medical Support Assistant positions are assigned to the Health Administration Service at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, Chicago, IL and performs a variety of technical support duties that facilitate the work of physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nursing assistants and other members of the medical facility who provide direct patient care. Performs clerical work in support of the care and treatment given to patients, may work in other areas as assigned in Medical Center.

Duties
Duties for a Medical Support Assistant (MSA), at the full performance level of a GS-679-5 include:
-Screens visitors, patients, and staff according to current guidelines.
-Takes temperatures, asks screening questions, and takes other vital signs.
-Greets patients and visitors in a pleasant and courteous manner.
- Scheduling, canceling, re-scheduling patient's appointments and/or consults.
- Receiving and placing telephone calls, scanning and faxes.
- Resolving simple to moderate problems.
- Monitoring appointments for areas of responsibility.
- Provides coverage for other units.
- Reviewing and updating bed board.
- Verifying and updating demographics and insurance information.
- Processing emergency and non-emergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals.
- Performing basic eligibility, co-payments and preauthorization requirements for specific coverage.
- Interfaces with personal computer applications as well as numerous VA specific applications such as VISTA.- Performs other assigned duties.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 9:00am - 5:30pm

BASIC REQUIREMENTS
Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3.g.).
Experience. No Experience required.
Education: High school diploma, General Education Development equivalency certificate, or proficiency certificate from a State or territorial-level Board or Department of Education.
Licensure/Certification/Registration. None

English Language Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. ยง 7403(f).
Grade Determinations:GS-5 level
Experience: One (1) year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade.
OR,
Education: Successful completion of two (2) years of education above high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)
AND,
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Ability to operate computerized programs and systems in order to enter, modify, and retrieve sensitive medical and patient identifying information (PII) into or from electronic health records, scheduling systems, and/or reports.
2. Advanced knowledge of medical terminology specific to understand medical diagnosis and procedures sufficient to communicate clinical staff instructions to patients.
3.Ability to schedule medical appointments in a clinical setting.
4. Ability to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties [performing patient support work
5. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in person, electronically, and/or by telephone, with internal and external customers.
6. Skill in customer service with the ability to identify customer concerns, and refer to the appropriate staff, as necessary, to ensure a satisfactory resolution.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-5.
Work Environment: The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts, which require normal safety precautions. The work requires safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls and observance of fire regulations. The work area is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated. The employee works in a close proximity to patients, and is therefore, exposed to communicable diseases. Some exposure to verbal abuse may be experienced in certain position.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
