Summary The Eastern Oklahoma VA Health Care System is hiring one (1) Medical Instrument Technician (Diagnostic Ultrasound) located in Tulsa, OK. Learn more about this agency Duties The employee must possess and maintain a current valid state driver's license as travel is required for this position.Performs in a hospital or outpatient setting all ultrasound examinations ranging from the routine to the highly specialized. Performance of the examination requires proper alignment and position of the patient. Sets up and adjusts all equipment and manually maneuvers the transducer to perform the exam. The spectrum of examination performed includes abdomen for tumors, cysts, abscesses, hematomas, inflammatory lesions such as pancreatitis, sizes of organs and their location and evaluations of abdominal aorta for aneurysm and/or dissection. Chest exams performed for pleural effusion, necks for thyroids, and marks anatomy for percutaneous aspiration and assists radiologist during invasive procedures such as external biliary drainage, abscess drainage, thoracocentesis, etc. Determines depth, location, and required needle angle for the lesion to be sampled. Performs scrotal exams to assess for testicular tumors and inflammatory findings and performs pelvic exams for tumors and tubule pregnancies. Performs ultrasound procedures for examination of vascular diseases of the abdomen, neck, and extremities.Responsible for obtaining pertinent and abnormal human anatomy. Knows and understands the principles of ultrasound and the highly specialized equipment well enough to confirm the technical acceptability of an ordered scan or to consult the radiologist concerning questionably appropriate orders. Skill set includes Room preparation and supplies, scanning motions, TCG (Time Compensated Gain), zoom or expansion, digital image processing, hard copy, picture-oriented examination, organ-oriented examination, and initial interpretation the examination. Interpreting the examination requires identifying normal and pathologic appearances. Pathologic appearance includes intraluminal echoes that shadow, polyp, carcinoma, thick wall, size, obstructing lesions, common duct stone, tumor, benign strictures, texture, solid mass, cystic mass to name just a few. Initial interpretation and relevant data will be forwarded by the Ultrasound Technologist to the Radiologist before final interpretation is made. Operates digital computerized ultrasonic pulse-echo equipment to demonstrate major and minor organ systems. Utilizes a variety of types of pulse-echo principles or longitudinal and compression waves. Controls technical factors on ultrasound unit which will affect time, gain, amplitude, velocity, frequency, attenuation, absorption, reflection, scattering, refraction and diffraction. Selects between non-focused, fixed-focus, linear phased array, annular phased array, special-purpose (vaginal) or transducers for general scanning. Advises radiologist or referring physician of results of examination and provides a preliminary diagnostic evaluation. Notifies physician of significant findings, which may require immediate or emergent medical attention. Performs independent portable ultrasound examinations in the intensive care units and throughout the VA Medical Center when required. Receives and identifies patients, explains methods of procedures, assists movement of patients to and from wheelchairs, carts and tables, positions the patient, and performs examinations requested. Coordinates and assists examination scheduling. Evaluates the nature of critical and emergency procedures and rearranges priorities to accommodate them. Maintains records of patients treated, exams performed, scans taken, etc. Maintains a quality assurance program of all ultrasound scanning equipment, and cameras. Qualifications Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship. Citizenship of the United States. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part. Education. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. Grandfathering Provision. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Medical Instrument Technician - Diagnostic Ultrasound, GS-8 Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided the overall knowledge, skills, and abilities to conduct diagnostic ultrasound examinations in complex and unusual cases. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to perform diagnostic ultrasound examination on multiple areas of the body, including, but not limited to, the abdomen, pelvis, transvaginal, chest, small parts, thyroid, breast, and scrotum. Ability to perform vascular studies such as vertebral, renal artery, aortic aneurysm, portal-systemic shunts, etc. Ability to assist radiologists with biopsy procedures determining the location, depth, and required needle angle for the lesion to be sampled. Ability to assist in surgical procedures and fluid aspirations. Certification. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are desirable.
