Summary Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately mid-December through late November and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. This is an excepted service appointment, that confers competitive status after two years and upon meeting all performance and OPM qualification requirements. Learn more about this agency Duties Duties of the position include but are not limited to the following: Replaces solenoids, relays, control modules, water pumps, fuel injectors, spark plugs, brake pads/shoes, wheel bearings/hubs, ball joints, control arms, steering linkages, exhaust components, cooling system components, engine components, belts, hoses, tires, and complete assemblies such as engines, transmissions, transfer cased, transaxles and rearends. Services and checks air conditioning systems, including purging and recharging systems, flushing radiators and replacing anti-freeze solutions, and aligning cars and trucks by adjusting caster, camber and toe. May assist with, or prepare monthly reports, requisitions for supplies and parts, job reports and vehicle labor and parts forms. Responsible for neatness and organization of work area and assigned tools; parts control and inventory, immediate cleanup of any spills or other concerns that may present a hazard to shop personnel or others. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to five nights per month. Applicants are not required to address these competencies in a separate document but are encouraged to include in their resumes experience related to these competencies. Knowledge of various techniques for removing, replacing, cleaning, and installing a variety of parts, components, and accessories such as filters, tires, radiators, engine thermostats, wheel cylinders, etc. Basic understanding of electricity and hydraulics and the skill needed to make adjustments and settings, such as performing engine tune-ups, setting engine timing according to specifications, etc. Basic understanding of on-board computer diagnostic systems and other test equipment and ability to analyze test results in order to locate improperly functioning parts for repair or replacement. Skill in the use of basic tools common to the occupation (e.g. wrenches, sockets, ratchets, impact wrenches, etc.). Ability to read and interpret parts manuals and manufacturer's repair manuals. Education There is no substitution of education for the required special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof as outlined in this announcement. Additional information A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. Physical Demands: The incumbent is required to make repairs which often require them to work in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions, and the work performed frequently involves standing for long period of time, bending, stooping, crawling under vehicles, and making repairs in other tight spaces. The incumbent frequently lifts, handles, and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and occasionally moves moderately heavy items weighing up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds) with assistance or with mechanical devices. Working Conditions: Work is usually performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise, and fumes from vehicles. Occasionally the work may be performed outside under adverse weather conditions. The incumbent is continually exposed to dirt, dust, and grease, and to the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, cuts, and strains. To reduce the dangers and irritations from these conditions, the incumbent follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as safety shoes and glasses, and respirators.
