Job Description
Summary
This position is for a Section Chief of Podiatry at the William S. Middleton VA Hospital in Madison, WI and the Rockford, IL VA Clinic. This role is a board certified Podiatrist and educator responsible for leading the podiatry section within the Veterans Affairs facility. As the Section Chief in Podiatry, you will be asked to participate in the development, quality improvement, and teaching as it relates to your section needs.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
Diagnosis and foot/ankle pathology, and identification of related systemic conditions.
Complete medical and surgical management of podiatric pathology.
Appropriate consultation, referral, and co-management of patients with complicating systemic conditions, and Health promotion and disease prevention.
Prescription of pharmaceuticals and therapeutic devices, (orthotics, prosthetic devices, plaster casts, immobilizations devices, etc.).
Promote a cooperative and collegial environment within your area.
Oversee all clinical operations of the Section (scheduling, managing clinical consult services, tele-podiatry, and e-consults).
Collaboration with the PAVE, nursing care providers and nail technicians who provide support to the Podiatry Section.
Collaborate with nursing, pharmacy, and all other ancillary personnel throughout the facility.
Provide expertise in multispecialty and patient care related discussions.
Be a resource for Primary Care providers to assist in the timely care of patients and appropriate referral to Podiatry.
Work collaboratively with partners in the facility and VISN to ensure VHA metrics are met or exceeded.
Assist faculty and facility to meet established performance measures.
Will ensure timely record completion for all patients as outlined in institutional policies.
Completing routine chart reviews and other quality assurance work within the department as requested.
Attend General Medical Staff meetings and Medicine department staff meetings and chief meetings.
Directs the daily activities of the podiatry section including patient care standards, staff scheduling and administrative duties.
Oversee specialized care for foot, ankle, and lower extremity conditions including managing collaborations with other services.
Supports the program director for training future podiatrists in accredited multi-year programs.
All Chiefs are expected to participate in ongoing process improvements within their specific areas of expertise thereby promoting quality, efficiency, patient safety and timely access to care for our veteran patients.

Work Schedule: Monday -Friday Days, Call coverage and weekend coverage

Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
You may be required to serve a probationary period.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Podiatrist Basic Requirements
Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted. ~AND~
Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. ~AND~
Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.

Physical Requirements: The work requires standing or walking for a major portion of the work day. Physical requirements could consist of a variety of standing, walking, twisting, turning, sitting, bending, pushing, carrying and light lifting.
