Aerospace Engineer, AST, Heat Transfer (Direct Hire)

Summary As a Thermal Protection System engineer with the Structural Engineering Division, Thermal Design Branch, you will be responsible for performing thermal analysis and system management related to a variety of Programs including Orion and HLS. In this position the incumbent is responsible for working with the respective Program and Directorate personnel to ensure successful development and delivery of Thermal Protection Systems. Learn more about this agency Duties Collaborate with the System Manager to provide solutions to problems in the spacecraft developmental phases. Identify issues and provide engineering recommendations, as required, for resolution of any associated problems. Conduct a variety of tests, such as high-enthalpy, radiant heat and material property tests, required to develop and verify thermal protection systems. Perform spacecraft integration activities, such as technical reviews, operational plans, and/or reviewing contractor provided data to close technical requirements. Support a broad range of inter-disciplinary development, design, test, and verification activities to ensure system performance meets all the project requirements. Conduct technical assessments of contractor/commercial partner developed products. Facilitate or participate in program design reviews, safety reviews, product reviews, and other milestone meetings, and issue closeout for these reviews. Assist the System Manager in day-to-day activities including ITA and work package planning, technical evaluations, hardware development and verification, review and provide input related to products and documentation to partners and programs. Perform thermal analysis of spacecraft and spacecraft systems using a suite of tools and perform material response analysis of Thermal Protection Systems. To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level: Provide leadership/oversight of technical issue investigations, including developing strategic plans, assigning tasks and evaluating products; Provide technical support, real-time during spacecraft mission making assessments against established performance criteria; Developing and implementing software scripts to post-process large data sets and generate chemical process tables. Education Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following: a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.
