Summary
The Lead Medical Technician provides phlebotomy support for in- and outpatients at John D. Dingell VAMC and patients at the Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC), Domicile, and in-patient Nursing home facility. The Lead Medical Technician plans work assignments and workflow, is involved with the day to day activities and assigned needs of each section of the Laboratory, and provides phlebotomy and specimen processing training and education for laboratory and other healthcare professionals.

Major duties and responsibilities include:
Leads a team of employees performing work at the GS-5/6 level. Provides guidance and technical direction for accomplishing the work of the team by ensuring the work assignments of employees in the unit or team are carried out.
Reviews work in progress and complete work while determining if the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met.
Accessions, labels, and delivers specimens to respective testing areas. Rejects and cancels unsatisfactory specimens according to established policies and procedures.
Keeps accurate records of patient blood and urine specimens received. Records documentation of unacceptable specimens and canceled test orders after notifying the appropriate provider and supervisor of his/her designee.
Ensures that only acceptable specimens submitted are collected in proper tube or container, ensures that specimens are aliquot and labeled correctly and notifies providers of unacceptable specimens by the following proper protocol by documentation.
Maintains current knowledge of all phlebotomy and processing procedures, policies, and protocols.
Manages staff of GS-5/6 in the outpatient blood draw room.
Responsible for training, performing initial and annual competencies of job tasks, inventory, and patient flow in the outpatient blood draw area.
Insures HIPPA, OSHA, CAP and all other regulatory agencies standards
Oversees and orders office supplies and supplies in the blood draw room, including the replacement of supplies as needed.
Works in the call hub for the laboratory service.
Performs advanced phlebotomy services.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm. Rotating weekends and holidays 6:00am-2:30pm

Selective Placement Factors are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position. Applicants who do not meet it are ineligible for further consideration.
The Selective Placement Factor for this position is: Experience performing phlebotomy/blood draws on human patients.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in Federal service performing technical medical laboratory support work such as: performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings; or technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. This experience must be documented in your resume to receive credit.

Education: One full year of graduate education that is directly related to the work of this position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the one year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Transcripts required.

Combination: An equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate education as described that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position. Experience must be detailed, and transcripts are required.
