Job Description
Summary
This position serves as a Maintenance Mechanic for the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Main Medical Campus as well as other areas within the VA Health Care System. As a Maintenance Mechanic, you will perform a variety of tasks involved in the installation, maintenance, repair, upkeep of therapeutic and related ward equipment, building service and operation systems, fixtures, buildings and related structures.

Duties
Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following:
Repair, use and preventive maintenance of overhead patient lifting equipment, portable patient lifting equipment, beds, wheelchairs, stretchers
Ability to use and maintain medical air, medical vacuum, instrument air, waste anesthesia gas, dental air, dental vacuum, dental waste anesthesia gas, condensate return, hot water recirculation, heating hot water, chilled water, sump, domestic water pressure booster, ice melt, sump pump alarms
Read and interpret technical manuals, building plans, blueprints, and guides
Ability to draw or sketch a basic drawing that includes perspective and dimensions
Installs, modifies, repairs, maintains, and diagnoses trouble and makes repairs (electrical).
Performs a variety of plumbing installation and maintenance work which involves removing, cleaning, replacing, packing, and sealing defective parts of utility, supply, and disposal systems such as dirty traps, sections of broken pipe and tile, clogged pipes and fixtures, and leaky faucets and drains.
Planning and layout of sheet metal assemblies and fabrications and the ability to read, interpret and design are completed using the connecting joints.
Install sheet metal assemblies which could be used in HVAC systems, oven exhaust, and ventilation systems.
Make repairs and preventive maintenance on large and small systems where any numbers and types of pneudraulics and electrical controls and relays are required to make the system operate at peak efficiency.
Utilizes knowledge of pneudraulics, hydraulic, and mechanical operating characteristics of various machinery and equipment (Various)
Operate and maintain equipment such as pallet jacks, pallet stacker truck, power pallet jacks, warehouse scales, storage cages, arena seating, etc.
Inspects equipment and controls, making all necessary adjustments to valves, relays, and other controls to alter or change conditions to prescribed test temperatures and/or chamber pressures.
Uses voltmeters and wat maters to test equipment.
Operates various control systems; troubleshooting, installing and altering equipment/systems; using electrical measuring instruments and testing equipment; etc.
Maintaining plant operational records
Responsible for the safe handling of all hazardous materials associated with plant maintenance.
Maintain and use traffic control barriers, bollards, guard shacks, guard rails, building ladders, speed bumps, parking lot fencing, electric gates, parking lot height limit alarms, wall and door protection, cardboard compactors, bio-hazard sterilizer, glass crushers, scissors and equipment lifts, dock plates, bumper locks, overhead doors, roll down "firefly" doors
Maintain trash carts, scrubbers, floor polishing equipment, vacuum cleaners, food conveyors, tray-veyors, ovens, dishwashers, food disposal units, food mixing equipment, food slicing equipment, glass washers, food delivery and warming units, pot and pan washers
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, Full Time, 7:00am - 3:30pm

Qualifications
To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet the following:
SCREEN OUT:Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision. To qualify for this position, experience must include repairing and maintaining all types of patients lifting equipment, medical pumps, safety and traffic equipment, disposal equipment, non-motor vehicle equipment, and utility systems. (*If you answer yes to this question, your experience must be documented in your resume to receive full credit).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:The work requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions, frequently handle, lift, and carry items that weigh up to fifty pounds, and occasionally lift and carry items that weigh over fifty pounds. Incumbents will engage in periods of continuous exertion while cutting, welding, bending, and shaping complex items and constructing larger, bulkier items. The workday requires frequent activity and foot travel as well as use of all hand and power tools.
WORKING CONDITIONS:The work is performed inside, outside in fair weather and foul. It is usually dirty, dusty, greasy, wet, and sometimes requires incumbent to make repairs or perform maintenance in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. Workers may be required to work from elevated positions from a ladder, scaffolding or bucket or scissors lift. Workers may be required to work in cramped or close spaces. There is the possibility of frequent exposure to uncomfortable heat and cold conditions. Incumbent is exposed to possibility of cuts, abrasions, strains, sprains, burns and infection as well as the possibility of broken bones. Some work may expose incumbent to toxic fumes, high pressure air, high pressure fluids, steam, and condensate. Workers will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment as dictated by work conditions, such as protective eyewear, safety shoes/boots.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
