Job Summary: This internship will be run as a joint effort between the University of Pittsburgh Linguistics Department and 3M/M*Modal. Interns will spend 8-20 hours a week, for a total of 120 hours a semester, performing analysis, research and testing to support natural language understanding and machine learning systems.

This position provides an opportunity to transition from private, public, government, or military experience to a 3M career.

The Impact You'll Make in this Role:

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

• Interns will work on various Machine Learning and Natural Language Understanding projects, performing tasks such as comparing the output of different machine learning models, rating or creating document structure annotations, or researching language patterns to identify common issues and possible fixes. Interns will work closely with members of NLU and ML teams.
• Actively participates in relevant corporate programs/initiatives, complies with professional and quality standards complies with corporate policies and procedures, and acts in a manner consistent with 3M's values and ethical standards.

Your Skills and Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

• Pursuing a Bachelors degree or higher from an accredited institution
• Ability to work 8-20 hours a week

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

• Familiarity with machine learning, data science, and/or computational linguistics
• Familiarity with medical language, terminology and/or documentation
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to solve problems in a logical, methodical, and time efficient manner
• Ability to direct and influence others

Location: Pittsburgh, PA

Relocation: Is not approved

Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status)
