Summary
The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in one of the SI facilities serviced by the Office of Facilities Management (FM). The Office of Facilities Management is responsible for all Smithsonian facilities, many of which are designated as historic and all of which are visited by millions of people each year.
Duties
The Maintenance Mechanic Leader serves under the general supervision of the Craft Shop Supervisor. The employee is responsible for assisting the supervisor in planning, directing, and monitoring the operations of a zone Crafts Shop.
In this position, you will:
Assist the supervisor in planning, directing, and monitoring the operations of a zone Crafts Shop involving a staff ranging from 5 to 20 subordinates, typically including craftsmen, workers and helpers in the fields of carpentry, drywall, painting, wood crafting, framing, and masonry, electrical, plumbing and other skills as needed.
Perform the full range of leadership functions for the Craft staff including, but not limited to, providing input and assistance to the supervisor on developing performance plans and standards, evaluating performance and coaching staff on performance.
Use a Facility Management computer software system (Facility Center) for work order management and reporting.
Assure adherence to safety and fire prevention requirements and assures that all safety training and equipment are provided to Shop employees, including all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as respirators, safety goggles, hard hats, masks, gloves, etc.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires the physical ability to perform moderately heavy work including lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 50 lbs.; work outside in all weather conditions with exposure to dirt, dust, pollen and insects; climb ladders and stairs; and stand and walk for extended periods.

Additional Conditions of Employment:
Must have a valid State driver's license. (You must submit a copy with your application)
Must be available to work late shifts, weekends and holidays and is subject to being called in for emergencies to restore the Smithsonian Institution to normal operations.
Must be available for call backs and emergency overtime.
