Summary This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This position is located at Fort Belvoir, VA. This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date. Click here for more information on SRC for Firefighters (Primary/Rigorous) Duties Serves as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property. Responds to aircraft, fire, rescue, brush, forest, vehicle and structural fires, hazardous material spills and releases and accomplishes containment and decontamination; confined space/heavy technical rescue. Conducts fire prevention inspections. Provides basic and intermediate life support treatment to patients within the pre-hospital environment, performing such duties as patient assessment and intervention. Performs CPR and advanced airways techniques. Performs maintenance tasks on firefighting and EMS apparatus, equipment and facilities. Requirements Conditions of employment Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment. This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident. This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations. The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions in order to drive an emergency vehicle or government vehicle. This position requires the employee to work 72 hours per week/144 biweekly hours and may be subject to recall after normal tour of duty in cases of emergencies. This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. The employee will be required to work 72-hour work week on a 24 on/ 24 off basis and will be subject to rotating assignments. This position requires a physical agility test. Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program. This position has a requirement to lift up to 100 lbs. in the regular performance of duties. This position requires the employee to wear uniform and/or protective clothing weighing up to 100 pounds. This position is a non-combat essential position. Incumbent may be ineligible from participating in the Ready Reserve. This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of up to 5% of the time. Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Responds as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property; 2) Provides basic and/or intermediate life support treatment during medical emergencies; 3) Performs maintenance tasks on firefighting and EMS apparatus, equipment and facilities. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). Selective Placement Factors: This position requires you to possess and maintain all of the following Department of Defense, International Fire Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) equivalent certifications: (Please note: All certifications must be uploaded at time of application). Firefighter I Firefighter II Airport Firefighter Driver Operator Pumper Driver Operator Aerial HAZMAT Awareness AND Operations OR Technician Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-Intermediate or higher level certification issued by the State of Virginia or National Registry indicating a future expiration date. This position requires that you must possess and maintain a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification. This position requires that you must possess and maintain an Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification. The position requires a current Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (CPR and AED) card. Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Education This job does not have an education qualification requirement. Additional information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct Deposit of Pay is required.
