Job Description

Summary Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the United States Park Police mission. They provide the skills that are not readily available within the police force, but crucial to support law enforcement operations. Duties The major duties of this position include but are not limited to: Answer routine question and provide assistance to callers or visitors, and resolve administrative issues clearly and tactfully. Tactfully deal with others in stressful situations. Maintain confidentiality on matters of a confidential or sensitive nature. Work and collaborate with a variety of workgroups to achieve common goals. Write clear, persuasive and grammatically correct reports, position papers, and briefings. Requirements Conditions of employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. Complete the initial online assessment and USAHire Assessment As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated. This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider: your performance and conduct; the needs and interests of the agency; whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service. Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized. Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-03/30/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position performs administrative/secretary duties and a typing proficiency of 40 words per minute with 3 or fewer errors is required. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position. - AND -To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes all of the following: Providing program and administrative support; Operating office automation equipment in the preparation of reports, letters, memoranda, transmittals, etc.; Perform time keeping functions; Receiving/distributing incoming mail; Establish and maintain office files, calendars, and make arrangements for meetings/conferences such as space, people, time and travel arrangements. You must include hours per week worked. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education There is no substitution of education for experience at this grade level. A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized for a newly selected employee when appointed to a permanent, temporary, or term position. A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another. This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate Physical Demands: Although primarily sedentary in nature, the position occasionally demands the incumbent to walk, stand, bend, or carry light items. The work does not create any special physical demands. Working Conditions: The work is performed in a typical office setting and includes the everyday risks and discomforts typical of offices and meeting rooms. Occasionally it may be necessary to travel to another sites operated by the United States Park Police to attend meetings and deliver materials. Incumbent adheres to safe work practices with office equipment, observance of fire regulations, and is responsible for implementing emergency evacuation procedures for the building.
